FTFA: Bajarin agrees that the patent is yet another sign of the need for patent reform. "This is one of those disappointing actions by the patent department and demonstrates their weakness when it comes to technology," Bajarin said. "It is not clear that Facebook actually invented anything unique or proprietary in order to get this patent. They used open-source code, namely JavaScript, which is open and free and created a process by leveraging existing technology."
Two things teach my kids are 1) Don't be a product of your environment and 2) for their actions, there is an equal, opposite and skewed reaction. They learn that they have more control over their own lives and are much happier, healthy and less gullible.
I wonder if theses school administrators are being bribed by media and advertising agencies to peek in at home. Either that or the independent thinker alarms started going off.
Add to that mixture the era of homeland insecurity, a shaky political foundation that's spun out of control, an economy that has failed and they're up against an overwhelming system that - well let's hope they rise up and say enough is enough and usher in an age of accountability where those in authority are sentenced proportionately to the number of lives they've hrmed, simplicity and mercy. I hope they humble us all.

Endeavor will have its final flight in July as the Obama administration has decided to cancel a planned follow-on program intended to return U.S. astronauts to the moon, due to cost concerns
- Never went to the moon cover-up?
Instead the US plans to develop technology for eventual human travel to Mars, and also ramp up space mission from the private sector.
- Distract them with mars!
With the shuttles' retirement, only the Russian and Chinese governments will have the ability to put people into orbit.

Hey, it was a knee jerk reaction on my part. I just didn't expect to find this here. I vented before I thought about it. Living in Alaska kind of messes with your perspective. Read this and maybe you can see why. http://www.ktuu.com/Global/story.asp?S=10841687 and to quote, "Another alarming snapshot is the age of sexual assault victims in rural Alaska. Seventy-five percent are younger than 18 and more than half are between 6 and 15 years old,." No, the internet is not a baby sitter, but I am the one who showed them slashdot.
Thanks for the suggestions.
I haven't bumped into the Maori chants yet, but I love the movie Whale Rider!
Anyway, here's a book I read last year when I was putting around in Bristol Bay with a lunatic for a skipper.

Enjoy!
I'm not so sure the find is suggestive of "maritime capabilities". To prove such a statement, you would have to prove evidence of navigation. Even if it were only celestial navigation, stronger evidence would be to find more than one such remote site with similar styles of survival technology.
From the article: More than 2,000 stone artifacts, including the hand axes, were collected on the southwestern shore of Crete, near the town of Plakias.
The question, at least for now, should be whether or not they went back.
I say let's come up with a video for new linux users that is similar to the scene in the matrix when Morpheus first loaded the construct for Neo. Let it be a guided interactive tour where the user can learn more about the tasks they're interested in as it compares to the"other" OS.Let it show what other distributions can do. After a short time the users will drift towards a particular distribution they want to try. I believe something like this could leave a new linux user walking away from the experience with a sense of confidence instead of being overwhelmed and confused.
At the start of the video, guide them through all versions of windows and show the progress of microsoft. After that, point out the barriers and then break through them by letting them do the breaking through.
Show a 10 minute video with a visual representation of what goes on behind the scenes as linux installs - from moving the kernel into memory to first boot. The show how linux is all around them in various devices and on various servers across the internet.
Sow how microsoft puts up the barriers users don't see. Show how exploits have become integrated into Os's - focus stealing etc... Let's show how microsoft has had to bow down to open source - what open source does to free the strangle hold.
Many people learn visually, let's not neglect those folks. Many people have had so much hell with microsoft that they're afraid or unwilling to try anything new.
Let's get off our asses and put the final nail in the microsoft coffin!
It's not surprising at all. What is surprising is that, in my opinion, we are experiencing a technological dark age where innovations are shelved in favor of a fossilized band-aid infrastructure.
Quite possibly you're right. However it is common that when businesses grow and become more efficient, they usually start producing their own supplies rather than purchasing them.
Maybe in the long run I'll be using a Google router with a kilowatt rating similar to my main power panel. Plugged into that router could be separate power/ fibre lines for each of my appliances, which will be network appliances with mac addresses.. I'll be able to plug in additional sensors to detect the freshness of my food in the fridge, better regulate the efficiency of my dryer, turn of my lights, water my lawn, etc... If I buy Google appliances with advertising screens built in, maybe sponsors will pay for my power or give me discounts if purchase their products. This could all be linked to my Google rewards account. Hell, why not also go wireless with this power through inductive coupling! Next thing you know, we'll all be wireless network appliances with built in sensors. Our cars won't start if we're too buzzed up. It will even come to the point where we can sell our intellectual property for free power since an upgrade will transmit our thoughts. And there will even be hope for non-productive types to contribute idle brain power to BOINC projects. Behold the era of the Manchurian Crack Heads!
Well, could and should Sun yank the rug from under their feet?

Well, that sure beats the shit out of raising taxes!
It will be nice when the day comes when open source has taken over and all of this will be a moot point.

I just added tat to stumbleupon. Here's one for ya! http://worldfamousdesignjunkies.com/illustration/the-internet-is-breaking/attachment/manupu/
Arm the penguins and let Linus sort 'em out!

Hey, a parent looks in all directions!
Yeah my kids read slashdot, and they use fedora too.
Not at all, but don't you think it's my place to protect my kids?
My concern is about pedophiles.
The site says you have to be at least 16. As if I don't already have enough problems with my kids.Gee, thanks for giving this site publicity.

Wouldn't skynet be the precursor to the matrix?
