  1. Re:G force issue! on Nuclear Fuel For Superfast Interplanetary Travel · · Score: 1

If I were to endure a 2 week acceleration/deceleration trip to mars, given the distance, I'd be puree on arrival.

You would be completely comfortable the entire time if the acceleration were kept around 1G. Since we are currently experiencing an acceleration equivalent to that all the time. To turn you into a puree we would need to use a wood chipper.

The real hazard comes from little chunks of rocks hitting you while you are moving. This could turn you into swiss cheese to stick with the food motif.

Actually the link at the end of the article is Email. I would imagine that it is due to the fact that the word email appears at the beginning of a sentence.

If we patented these methods of world destruction, could the human race survive forever?

Only until the patent runs out.

... I think it's very admirable what they are doing by refunding the difference.

How wonderfully innocent of you to believe that. The real reason that they said they were sorry is to try and salvage any good karma that they had left with their customers. Rest assured that if they had not been caught they would have continued to vary their pricing in order to determine the point at which they get the maximum profit.

While I agree that Stephen Donaldson's Gap series is excellent, I would also warn that it has very strong violence, and strong sexual content. These books probably aren't the best thing for a 13 year old to read as an intro to SF. Maybe once she has matured a few years.

    Possibly more appropriate are:
Robert Heinlein - Some sexual content, but nothing really disturbing.

    Frank Herbert - Dune series

Orson Scott Card - Enders Game as well as the sequels.

    Brin - The Uplift War.

Tolkien - Start with the Hobbit.

Asimov - Foundation Series / Robot Series

  6. Re:Good. on Microsoft To Go Straight to the Supreme Court? · · Score: 1

I think that Microsoft would be interested in dragging out the case as long as possible. Why? The longer a case drags out, the more money it costs. If a case is drug out long enough, someone is going to run out of money and will be forced to drop the case. And Microsoft certainly isn't going to run out of money first.

You are wrong here. MS is fighting the government, and I don't think that the government will run out of money, since they are the ones printing it.
