I remember back when BBS's were the thing, and the net was only a rumor...I say a hack for backing up your harddrive on a VCR... I'm sure the file is floating around somewhere.. but I'd have no clue where to find it...
you must be lucky to be able to run with out the case on.... I just built a machine that gave off so much RF noise I couldn't watch tv or listen to the radio with the case off...
I had a payroll system running on an old dos 286, which was hardware compliant, but when we tried to set up the database for this fiscal year, the software crashed, and the upgrade only ran on Win95/98. So were were forced to upgrade, and then I had to spend weeks teaching the new system to book keeper, who would have been happy to stick to her dos program... it that a REAL problem? was for me:)
I'm surprised no one has thought of this before... all you would need is a series of not so large explosives set to go off right as the concussion wave of the first explosion goes past them, adding to the force of the wave, add to it as many explosives as you want until you have a wave of the force you want....you just need to find out the spacing and timing that would work best...and that's just some math...
this has all the local distruction of a nuclear device, but none of the global nuclear problems fallout problems, and you're only safe if you are a sizable distance inland.
the threat of some terrorist group with scuba gear trying to do this is frightenning.
The reason why water is used in radiation shielding is that it contains two Hydrogen atoms per water molecule. Since an atom of Hydrogen has more or less the same mass than a neutron, it acts like a billiard ball: the neutron tends to stop, and the proton is transferred all the kinetic energy. And since the proton is a charged particle, it stops quickly.
often these neutrino telescopes use "heavy water" -- that is water formed out of hydrogen with two neutrons, so that it absorbs even more background radiation...
it's suprising these things can even pick up anything as well shielded as they are.
it would be really really cool if the could find out more about all these planets they are finding... right now all they can tell is mass (and from that, size) and dimensions of it's orbit...
and an even better question, is anyone pointing radio telescopes at these flying rocks?
The extinct species they are trying to bring back weren't wiped out by plagues. They were killed by human actions, whether that was killing them for food or taking away their habitat. These animals functioned quite well...
the only possible problem I can foresee is the massive inbreeding, since only a few genetic samples are available... but that never seemed to be a problem when they restored the bison to Yellowstone National Park...they have herds of thousands upon thousands of bison there that all come back from the 70 they rounded up save the species.

um..you mean looking at slashdot on a palm pilot, and hitting reload every once and a while... doesn't sound that much like a new idea to me.
at least Nate won't have to worry about a corportation trying to get his site. who would want oostendorp.net anyway? >=D

maybe that is a good thing after all.
this this news really big enough to deserve being posted 3 times?

I'm sure Jesus would be REAL happy to hear that people are gambling over his return.
I'm sure they could cast lots over his clothes too...oh wait... been done. nevermind

what is wrong with just calling it That New Planet... at least until we find another one...
then we can just call it That Tiny Planet...

does this mean someone is working on a cure for being a geek? that would be bad... very bad...

I hope they make it work.
Pizzazz, or the B50,
will be sold with related new data storage systems.
does anyone know what they mean by that? a new kind of harddrive, or something completely different from hard drives...
hmm...
