Actually, those hacks are awesome and really show off the Wiimote technology. Personally, I'd like to see devices made to incorporate those hacks into actual purchasable products with a real wiimote, instead of some overpriced knockoff.
ASM is useful in several applications. Most notably low level electronics and theres plenty of complex problems that do require it to be written at the machine level. Lets not even get into boot scripts or anything involving low level booting. You don't need to be an expert but you should have some basic understanding so as to be able to peruse ASM and understand what the hell is going on.
