This reminds me of Stephenson's thesis in Snowcrash of how a multimedia culture makes a great medium for the viral transmission of ideas.
It doesn't matter which came first, the secret government helicopter landings in the corn fields or the bored youth out fabricating DIY crop circles, the imaginings of whomever has the most feasible or just plain convincing story are going to propagate.
Can you get vaccinated against grocery store tabloids?
I got my 4 way switch box about two years ago and it has no restrictions on resolution like other ppl are complaining about because it is just an electrical connection, with a nice dial to choose betwixt the 4 'puters. Plus the bonus that it costs all of 26$ for the box and 14$ in cables per 'puter for the AT/DB9. They also have a PS/2 box.
The only problem I've ever had with it is that after several thousand switching cycles it has gotten a bit touchy about the video on one position, it shows up but is yellow until I wiggle the switch (prolly just a dirty contact, I should go fishing and see if I can't fix that:)
I had no problems reading the article, mind you I am in the lab so somebody else may have signed up and I am lucky enough to still have a cookie.. OLGA is still out there, check Harmony Central but reading through the article it sounded like the biggest argument against OLGA was that they had lyrics on the site, so once they have all the lyrics on lyrics.ch or where ever OLGA should be able to put up the tabs and link to the lyrics..
there was an article in Science magazine back about a year ago explaining that some researchers had discovered that changing a nanotube's shape (I believe by changing a very few bonds) that it would go from conducting _very_ well to insulating quite well. as far as schools doing research in fullerenes, we are a little tiny school (3500, including grad students in the seminary) and a few of my friends spend the summer producing buckyballs. (which just goes to show that the really cool stuff doesn't have to be done by the big boys, a nice garage can be the spawning pool for new technologies:)
