Working on your "career" is a very sad and lonely life, only fools chase that rabbit.
I disagree completely with the conclusion you come to. Some people are doing their jobs to do something good. They fulfill themselves, by doing those jobs.
There are idiots that climb the career ladder in a job they don't like, but saying that only fools chase career path is a closed minded conclusion.
No, there will be a massive shift in wealth. Let's just hope it will not be accompanied by a world war, because the last N shifts like that had a massive wars associated with them.
PS: My own country's http://www.dedikuoti.lt/ is really low cost for what they provide. But.... You essentially have to know Lithuania, as they don't have an English version of their site.
I personally prefer www.hub.org.
A) You get a FreeBSD VPS (jail'ed)
B) Support the host that hosts PostgreSQL
C) In addition you get access to a number of shared PostgreSQL versions and a number of MySQL's. So you don't spend your RAM or disk space on your DB. Quite convenient for smaller needs.
Have you actually read what Apple claims as sales? When they ship their devices to a retailer - that is a sale. They however count sales as sales to end users when they sell them via Apple store or online store. So they can't really use shipped or sell, because that muddles up their statement. So they use the PR'ish stunt and stock to the most favourable term - sales.
Apple makes version 1.0 and it becomes an insane hit
No, it didn't become an insane hit. Apple made it an insane hit. I like that they pushed the market forward. I wanted an ARM based tablet ever since ARM unveiled their higher level devices. I was actively thinking about an eInk reader for a tablet, you know before I saw CrunchPad(summer 2009). So all in all, I credit Apple for the courage to push a device that was floating around for a few years and actually polish it. There probably were other ARM based tablets(big screen ones), but I doubt anyone could challenge the marketing power of Apple...
Claiming that they have any kind of exclusivity over it, is just ridiculous though...
That is technically not entirely true about Dalvik. Because it is not multitudes less efficient, it's only 10-30% when you consider the fact that most mem is shared(you know Copy On Write technique?) And with CPU you end up about the same overall, for non human optimized code.
Yes, and the rest of the world just plain doesn't matter... Yes, I know Slashdot is US centric, but maybe just sometimes could you people get your heads out of your asses and look around?
That is pretty much what an invention is - you use something that was never used in that particular way. If I can cause a semiconductor to explode with enough force to make is a good ammo propellant, I can claim invention on it. But increasing the contact area of a semiconductor junction to get more power throughput is definitely NOT an invention(Intel's 3D transistors are not an invention, at least any physicist will tell you that he knew that would help).
Let's take LED lights as an example - has anyone used PN junction to produce light? That would be No. Then there is laser LED - which I don't believe were inventive because LEDs were already used to produce light, making it more powerful(in itself) is not invention. Overcoming some natural constraint of old LED construction to allow them to generate powerful enough light, that would be an invention.
No... Hunting with firearms is for spoiled cowards. I would be all for it if he was to fight it out with his bear hands! On a plus side, we would no longer have a GoDaddy CEO:-D
Shell access is irrelevant in that case. Because the app itself would root the device without any shell access.
Even in that case the shell is ridiculously restricted on Android. You can't even run sqlite command from the app.
But sometimes the 'stupid managers' actually have their priorities right for the business and org, at least better than us nerds complaining about our part of it.
That is an exceptionally rare thing to have. Most managers don't have a clue how important IT is. They should be reminded that the first letter in IT stands for Information and all of them know how important is Information. But until someone presents them with a pretty picture of their Enterprise Architecture, they will not have a clue how Information can make or break their company.
To be fair, government users rarely need anything as advanced as Excel. And Word is on par with Writer. I mean what else can you add to a rich text editor...
Excel however is a really advanced tool that barely can be replaced by anything for proper power users. But the number of those users is no more than 1%(at least that is what I feel when interacting with people).
The irony of the sysadmin - If your boss thinks you are not doing anything then you are the most important element in his IT systems.(Granted, the systems are actually up and running.)
Indeed, my best communication with a Nigerian scammer involved me giving them my "contact details" - Ngundongo Alituku an employee of Lusaka port authority:-D
And I still have a few acounts here and there to maintain that "identity":-D

For computationally intensive operations, you use Renderscript. For portable games(Android iOS) you use C/C++.
That is technically not entirely true about Dalvik. Because it is not multitudes less efficient, it's only 10-30% when you consider the fact that most mem is shared(you know Copy On Write technique?) And with CPU you end up about the same overall, for non human optimized code.
LUL! What? I could get a free iPhone from the very first day iPhone was being offered. And Android was not even on the radar...
Yes, and the rest of the world just plain doesn't matter... Yes, I know Slashdot is US centric, but maybe just sometimes could you people get your heads out of your asses and look around?
Yes, therefore Windows is only 4-5 times bigger than OSX because we all know that programs written for Dell don't work on Lenovo's... /s
That is pretty much true of any platform - therefore installing any apps on any platform is a security risk.

Innovative stuff shouldn't be patentable in any case, only inventions are patentable. Innovation != invention.

It's not root access. It's shell access.

Thunderbird has no issues with formatting from Outlook or other clients. I regularly switch between Outlook, Thunderbird, Horde IMP and GMail.
I know quite a lot of that kind of people. Remember, that working for the government is a rather relaxed job.
Well, Windows systems have their upsides and downsides. But I doubt that remote management is something that Windows is lacking in.
