  1. Re:I stopped... on Sony BMG Says Ripping CDs is Stealing · · Score: 1

I for one already don't, my household hasn't bought a CD in years, partly because of the music industry practices and partly because there is nothing we felt we wanted. ALL of our purchases are online and most are for unsigned bands. One part of the problem is that Sony and 'friends' will see people like us and think that we are a minority. But this view is definately becoming more mainstream and if her comments get into the mainstream media she will have done her cause yet more damage. As is pointed out by many others, her view makes almost all people pirates and people like myself who buy a copy legaly tend to resent it. One other thing. I knew people who pirated huge amounts of software in the Amiga days (not distribution, just collecting). Not one of them ever used ANY of their illegal programs, the vast majority were never even installed. It was wrong to get the stuff but it didn't hurt the companies one little bit because they were definately NOT lost sales. I wonder how much music piracy is like that.

  2. Re:from the article: on The Pirate Bay Won't Be Censored · · Score: 1

It seems odd that a positive bias is afforded to the pirate bay (certainly not negative) when we know they really do facilitate copyright infringment. It is worse though that they can continue however kids using peer-to-peer, and not event understanding what peer-to-peer means, get clobbered.

Demanding that we be able to view/listen to our purchased products how we see fit is a very different argument to defending people who admit and even enjoy notoriety as thieves.

I am a bit hypocritical in that I might download a movies to see what it is like or copy an overnight rental for viewing later but if I like it I nearly always buy it. It just means I spend less on junk (now that has hollywood scared, not that I have watch many hollywood films in the past 5 years). I say almost because some foreign stuff is pretty hard to get.

  3. Re:No on Microsoft Pleads With Consumers to Adopt Vista Now · · Score: 1

It looks pretty but other than that there is no reason for the update. Maybe the security is better but as I have literally had one virus in 20 years and very little spyware it doesn't seem to be a real problem for me at least. I had two machines using Vista. One I upgraded(!?) and another a new laptop that came with it. I had enough on my upgraded machine and went back to XP when one day Vista decided I needed to install IDE hard disk drivers and wouldn't take no for an answer (device manager look fine and reinstalling the montherboard drivers didn't help). Vista is ok on the laptop but I hate it when it turns itself on after I put it into hibernate. I can see all the lights are off for a good 10 mins at least then when I grab it to go to work in the morning the damn thing is in suspend mode (blinking power light and wireless light is illuminated) and used half the power overnight. The device driver support is pretty bad. I tried using one of my 5 year old plus network cards but there is no driver support for any of non-montherboard cards. Pretty annoying.
