Irregardless of how many women actually are gamers, 50% of *people* are women, and thus 50% of potential gamers are women. Duh.
My girlfriend is an avid gamer. In fact, when she's over at my apartment she probably spends more time gaming than I do (I've got the GeForce, she doesn't *grin*). But she refuses to read gaming magazines and most gaming websites (excepting Blue's News and the non-IGN Asheron's Call sites) because she's sick of the ads. I mean, ShugaShack's "Babe Hunt" is just inexcusable, whether you're male or female.
As a male gamer, I'm SICK of being lumped in with 15-year old 3133t quake hax0rs. I'm SICK of Lara Croft. I'm SICK of IGN's banner ads. Please, gaming magazine editors and gaming website editors, just STOP it. You make us all look like idiots.
I am hereby announcing my intent to file a patent covering any applications of ass-whuppin' to the US Patent Office for egregious stupidity. Contact me for a license to apply any such ass-whuppin'.
Did you actually _read_ any portion of the bill? Unless your anonymized mail is also unsolicited commercial email, you don't have a thing to worry about.
Well, if Microsoft made their code open source some of their drivers might come out of that... one possibly useful thing. I do agree that most of the GUI/OS code would be worse than useless though!
Please add to this list. Personally, I'm amazed these companies don't have 800 numbers (they probably do and just don't list them). That does not speak well for their desire to hear feedback from customers.
Hey... listen, I don't want to hear about "Q3Test doesn't support this" and "Q3Test doesn't support that". That's Windoze thinking. If Q3Test doesn't support your card, it probably means your card's manufacturer hasn't written drivers, or released the specs from which drivers could be written.
This means you should find 800 numbers and email addresses for that company and BUG THE HELL out of them. Whining on Slashdot about a lack of support will get you nowhere. Turn that energy to more productive efforts and start letter-writing campaigns to get get Linux drivers AND SPECS from nVidia, ATI, and others. Call their 800 numbers daily. Let them know that Linux users will not sit quietly and wait for the powers-that-be to acknowledge us.
Yes, but Laxative, your post doesn't address the message of the article, which is that Linux could use better documentation. Duh. What couldn't use better documentation? I mean, can you really justify saying "Linux *should* be hard. Linux *shouldn't* be documented"? If you don't like documentation, sit there and don't RTFM and see if anyone cares. The Salon article makes a great (if obvious) point- the documentation of most Linux apps is abyssmal and if it were as good as the code then it would be easier for *everyone* to use Linux. More newbies using Linux means that, two years later, all those newbies could be experienced users ready to start coding/documentating/helping other folks. This is A GOOD THING. Attitude will get you nowhere.
But doesn't QuakeIII use OpenGL? Are there OpenGL drivers under Linux for other cards than 3Dfx? I sure hope so, as I would really like to put a Matrox in the new box I'm building...
There's a lot of FUD there. I think Berst does make one good point- factionalism. I'd hate to see Linux go the way of the pretty recent *nix seperatism (SCO, BSD, etc.) The reliance on a central kernel which cannot be modified privately cuts down on this, but really.... how long before we've got a RedHat kernel against a Debianized kernel against S.U.S.E. with an exclusive license to Netscape 2000 or some such nonsense? It's not inconceivable... until people start suing each other over breaking the GPL instead of just badmouthing violations...
Don't send the Miller bros. or Cyan spam about a game they did not develop. Myst III was developed by Presto Studios.
Look out for Jon Katz's new book- _Leeks_!

Hey y'all- you do realize that these are exhibit passes, right? That means no talks, right?
