I am not familiar with the American school system, but I don't get why let the district design the tests anyway? If there is such a clear conflict of interest, someone higher up should design the tests, maybe the state.
Here are my understandings of the situation, in chronological order:
1. Crisis in Tibet, there were government crack down of demonstrations and riots by Tibetans, including hate crimes against other ethnic groups.
2. Western media (not all of them, but a majority) eager to paint the picture of evil Chinese, so that people can feel good about themselves being morally superior.
3. Chinese overseas who saw the news react to the distortion of media and (in my view) the ignorance of crimes committed by Tibetans.
4. media and politicians keeps feeling good about themselves, think that the Chinese doesn't deserve the Olympics.
5. Various humiliation effort against Olympic torch, Chinese react strongly.
6. (in my view) nationalism in China goes overboard.
Your prejudice against Chinese people just due to difference of opinions sickens me. You are not the one to take the consequences if anything happens to China. Chinese people have to live their lives and they are putting up struggles in their own way. The last thing they want is their opinions being dismissed because they are inferior "brainwashed" people.
All the comments just went directly to all sorts of China-bashing and wild speculation. I believe hearing about something like this a few years ago, when google refused to censor itself. Ever since google starts to censor itself I have not heard anything like this. This has nothing to do with foreign companies making money -- plenty of foreign companies are making big bucks in China, but this has everything to do with censorship. When google started self-censorship, it already lost the head start and had to fight an uphill battle to gain back the market.
The kid is of CHINESE origin. The only reason he gets expelled and transfered and accused is because he LOOKS LIKE the killer in VT. This is blatant RACISM. Also I think slashdot editors are not telling the whole story by not mentioning this.
Why do people want to carry guns? Because they are selfish and arrogant. They are selfish because they only want to secure their own safety, and ignore the fact just as responsible people can get guns, irresponsible people can as well. They are selfish also because when people are free to get guns, the most vulnerable people are the ones without guns, but they don't care.
They are also arrogant because they believe they never mess up. I believe the people who shoot each other later believed they would be responsible when they got the guns, but they couldn't. Things happens. Responsible people should not trust themselves so much to grant themselves the power to kill other people.
