  2. No Problems on Athlon Motherboards And Chipsets Under Linux · · Score: 1

    Been running Linux (RH 6.2 briefly, mainly Slack 7) on my Athalon 650/Asus K7M with no problems. I have a V3-2000 PCI so I don't know about the AGP issues, although this was the first time I'd heard of any problems with the Athalon. 2.2.12 worked fine out of the box and 2.3.99-pre6 even has a nifty "Athalon" option under CPU type :) Woohoo!
    Oh, one minor problem, I had to do the 'append mem=256M' thing in my lilo.conf, no biggie.


  3. My First Language... on Best Way to Get Kids Started in Programming? · · Score: 1

    ...was BASIC. On DOS 5.2. My dad, who was doing mainframe programming at the time, bought me the book "BASIC Programming for Kids" or something along those lines. I tore through it, hacked up gorilla and nibbles which came with DOS and generaly raised hell in the computer labs at my elementary school :) Ah, the good ol days. After BASIC I went on and did other things throught elementary school, picked up programming again at the tail end of Jr High when I learned C. Since then I've picked up C++, LPC, x86 assembler and Python. I must say that after the first language, all the rest were just a logical progression and learning new syntax. (except assembler, which was a breaking down of the concepts I learned in C ;))

    Anyway, back to the point. Although BASIC was my first language, I'm very impressed with Python and LPC. IMO, LPC is in many ways superior to C++... except you really can't use it for actual application development :) Then again, your kids might think it'd be fun to develop areas in a MUD. That would also be a way to get their friends involved, they could code up areas and share the game with their friends. Wahoo :)

    IMNSHO, Linux is first and foremost a server operating system. What else could it possibly be with the number of services that are enabled by default in most distros? Certainly it's interesting to run it on a desktop, I dual boot Linux/W98 on my desktop at home... but I run straight Slackware 7 (no X) on my servers and LRP on my router. Any "death matches" that focus mainly on "useability" are therefore pointless. What self-respecting admin is going to bog a server down with a GUI and pansy menus that fade in and out when you click on them? Oh, wait...

    Take the posts in question, encrypt them using the ultra-leet propritary encryption algorithm (that's ULPEA, a.k.a. ROT-13) and put a little note above each one saying, "Warning: If you were to decrypt this and read it your eyes would catch on fire and burn in the socekts which would also cause your eyebrows and possibly the hair on your head to catch on fire, after which you would be left with this smouldering mass of charred flesh where your head was previously. All because of MS. But don't stop buying their software." Yup, that'd be cool. Oh, and exploding CRT bombs too. I AM THE DIGI BOMBER!

    The market goes up, the market goes down. That's the way it is. It crashed in the 30s, we had a nice little party called WW2 which brought it back up again. The market is currently doing very well, or at least it was the last time I bothered to check. All this babble about 'e-commerce' and the 'new internet economy' is exactly that. It's just another way to sell stuff, it's not that big of a deal.
    Basicaly, what I think my point may be is that the populace in general (myself included) have absolutly no clue as to what's going on. Go around and preach about cataclysmic downfall and such all you want, I'll sit here and watch you get your feathers all ruffled. You don't know what's going to happen any more than I do, we'll both find out when the future finaly gets up off its ass and comes knocking at our collective door. The only differance is I won't have as high a blood pressure as you :)

    Sorry, but hardcopy is essential. In addition to the highliter and penguin doodle features that I have found to be so popular amongst my surveyed group (my cat and I, and the cat's asleep) there is what I like to call the "thinking time" feature. Honestly, who wants to lug a laptop into the can with them when they hanker down for some good old fashioned thinking time? This is when I do the vast majority of my documentation reading. What one does with the paper after finishing is left as an exercise to the reader.

    Has anyone else noticed that it's FORD that's setting up this whole scheme? Think about it... put the computers in every one of your employees houses. Rig some gizmo in the video card that flashes subliminal messages to your employees, making them soft and pliable for your oncoming religious disortations. Set up your CEO as the Second Coming of Ford himself, and you have a huge army at your disposal. You take over the imperial senate and eventualy rule the world! Every one's divided up into Alphas, Betas, Gammas and Deltas and coerced from birth to be happy with their everyday lives! NOOOOOOOOOO! I WANT TO BE MELANCHOLY!
