You have it all wrong, GPL is a brilliant option. Let's say that someone decides to install this software on your computer to listen in on your conversations. Since they are distibuting sofware that is under the GPL they have to make the source code available to you. To top it off all of the changes that they made to the code are also available to you under the GPL.
Those script kiddies won't even know what hit them.
