The developers who said that have all gotten jobs with other companies. The developers who still believe in Open Source principles continue to work diligently on the projects that excite them. If they didn't enjoy it they wouldn't do it.

The last time I checked anybody could make a personal copy of music, movies or games that they own for back up purposes. I personally use this when I want to watch my movies or play my games without putting wear on the originals or when not near my console or CD collection.
Works wonders and I guess as long as you get the files back at some point you could even loan them out to your friends.;)
