I recently came across an ultra cheap VHS given away free with a magazine. I was only good for a few plays because of the quality of construction. The top and bottom where stamped out of thin plastic sheet. The body was cut from a block polystryene foam to which the top and bottom sheets where glued. There was no front flap or reel locks.
I was a bit worried that once inserted in the VCR it might never come out !
At the risk of being a 'me too' I won't be buying any Sony product if they try this stuff. It's a pity because I spent a lot of money on their products and have been happy with them. Consumers can have long memories, I still won't buy French products after their bombing a ship in our harbour and thats after over 10 years. How long will Sony survive reduced sales if they upset most Internet users? May be they should look at why basicly honest people don't feel guitly about stealing music.
IBM are well supported here in New Zealand but are bit expensive. Still a lot cheaper that GSM. You could also try www.i4free.co.nz while here, which is, as the name implies, free. I would imagine that both would work with Linux. The phone connector used here is the BT standard (same as UK ?) and you can get a standard US RJ11 to BT lead cheap at most computer stores, hell if you are in Auckland CBD email at david@NOSPAM.annett.cc and I might be able to drop one off.
