  1. The death of Motif and CDE on KDE Developer on the GNOME Foundation · · Score: 1

Motif and CDE are dead. Film at 11:00.

Actually, they have been dead for awhile - when did anything new and exciting happen with either one? Years ago. So it's not surprising that Sun and the others are shifting to a more up to date desktop environment - otherwise, they would be hurt even more by Linux and Windows2000.

If KDE is badly hurt by the selection of GNOME as the replacement desktop environment, then KDE isn't very good. But since it is good, it will remain significant. And KDE may still end up on top - remember the proverb: "be careful of what you wish for - for you may get it".

But what should I know - I still use fvwm2. I don't need no stinkin' icons. CLI or die!

If you are running ssh, the X session will be tunneled through ssh - as long as you can ssh through a firewall, you can run an X session.

However, to run X remotely, you need alot of bandwidth. I've used lbxproxy with ssh from a remote site, and it was still *slow*. BTW, to use ssh + lbxproxy, do the following:

    lbxproxy -display remotehostname:10.0 :2 &
    setenv DISPLAY :2

and you are good to go.

It doesn't matter - the noise from the cavitation will drown out any sonar reading. You are flying blind. BTW, a torpedo using this technology is great - if someone fires one like this, it will be easy to detect, and the noise from it will cover up your tracks completely. -moi

Well, I just installed the latest version of fetchmail on a friends' linux system. The uptime of that system is 95 days, which corresponds to the last big power outage here. Not really noteworthy, even if it is only running Linux 1.0.9 (redhat 2.0.2). -me

Even if you could have a web page back then, who could read it anyway? (But some websites look like they were last updated around the year 1K). Could you imagine using a Microsoft product back then? Who would use "Microsoft Sword"? It gives a different meaning to the Blue Screen of Death. -barf
