  1. Re:artists are having a hard time not being heard. on Elton John Says Internet is Destroying Music · · Score: 1

Yeah, but dude, do you know how hard it is to acquire indie cred now? Everybody heard that goddamn Sister Sex Cauldron album when you did. How's a man to sort out the poseurs now? HOW?

  2. Re:Linux / OSX plans on A Majority of Businesses Will Not Move To Vista · · Score: 2, Insightful
Maybe. Polls like this are hard enough to interpret when they clearly state the question that's been asked by the pollster. These swings, while dramatic, could easily be influenced by the way in which a question was phrased if it changed from year to year...Note that different companies conducted each poll in question, so it's very likely that the questions themselves, while similar, in fact varied quite substantially. Heck, we don't even know what the stated margin of error associated with these statistics is.

In essence, I think it's hard to conclude that these numbers have much significance with the information we have.

  3. The actual patent on Music From DNA Patented · · Score: 4, Informative
Having attempted to actually read this patent, it appears that the links in both the summary and the (very brief) article take us to one pertaining to the chimeric encoding of plastidic phosphoglucomutase. Not ideal.

Here's a link to the actual patent of interest.

  4. Re:$2.50 $10.00 on For-Pay Demos Coming to Xbox Live? · · Score: 1

I doubt it's the warranties, since this is almost certainly driven by the game developers rather than Microsoft...More likely, it's just recognition by the developers of certain highly anticipated titles that gamers are willing to pay for demos in the aforementioned magazines and considering this an unexploited revenue stream. The sad part is, they're probably right.

  5. Re:Okay.... on Richard Garriot Argues Against Stagnant MMOG Design · · Score: 1

He seems to be trying to do just that. Whether he's correct it is really 'new' is arguable, but it certainly appears to be distinct from the rhythmic-button-mash that is WOW.

  6. Since TFA has so many spiffy ads... on MST3K is Back, Sort Of · · Score: 1

Here's a link to the actual Film Crew Online page. They've got an open vote to determine which of the four movies they're doing in their initial set is published first...Thankfully, not a winner in the bunch.

  7. Re:Laws are F***ING stupid. on Court Orders Dismissal of US Wiretapping Lawsuit · · Score: 1

Many of the issues of our society are only worsened by certain people's sense of morality. It just so happens that those morals are both extreme and somewhat out of step with the feelings of the average American. Morality is not a strong basis upon which to found a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, religiously diverse society.

What you should demand is more ethical governance. At present, that is not the direction we're going-- in order to protect the "good" in our society, those in power are increasingly less concerned with the ethical principles upon which our nation was founded. One thing that I think is often incorrectly discounted in criticisms of the NeoCons actions is their intent to do "good". I'm reasonably sure that, from their perspective, they are doing just that.

  8. Re:Crock on Industry Insider Blasts Comcast · · Score: 1

I've actually had decent luck recording digital cable via a custom PVR, though my experience may be colored by my location-- firewire recording works just fine with most of the DCT6XXX and DCT3XXX cable boxes from Motorola for non-subscription channels and, failing that, analog signals from cable boxes aren't laced with DRM. Add an IR Blaster and you're golden. The real concern here, though, is that there's no real way to break the tether to the STB, which, naturally, you're renting from the company for between $5 and $10 dollars a month. Comcast is doing something "interesting" in my area, too-- all the previously analog channels are becoming digital channels, effectively closing the analog hole at some point in the relatively near future. HBO is going digital only within the next month. They're offering up to four "free" cable boxes for a period of 6 months, presumably to kill customer complaints, but that's really going to be a hit for multi-tv households once that trial period is up. All of this is going to translate to yet-more-expensive cable bills for multi-TV households. Given that /without/ the subscription options metioned in the article above, my cable bill is already around $170($60 internet, $110 TV), things are getting really absurd. Honestly, the only think keeping me with Comcast rather than an alternate(DirectTv, Dish), is that there /is/ an analog hole for my PVRs...For now, anyway.
