  1. BCReason on NASA Plans Test of New Plasma Drive · · Score: 2, Interesting
I'm waiting for the Dirt Drive . Same concept as the Vasimir but instead of throwing Hydrogen away as propellant you use Silicon, the main component of dirt.

Why use precious hydrogen that can be used to make water when you could use dirt. The Moon has dirt, Mars has dirt, most asteroids have dirt.
(Technically it's regolith, but regolith doesn't sound as cool)

I know it will take some serious engineering to make a drive that uses a solid fuel. I'm thinking vaporize it with lasers, then everything else is pretty much the same as with the Vasimir.

    Advantages over Hydrogen:
    • Easier to obtain
    • Easier to store, no pressure vessels required.
    • More compact to carry.
    • Has more mass, therefore more thrust.
    • Safer, non flammable and not stored under pressure. No chance for an explosion.
    • Safer, wont leak away if a storage container is holed.

I don't think this is a case of scientific zealotry. The old socialist/communist supporters from the fifties and sixties found themselves persona non grata due to cold war hysteria. So they pretty much took over the nascent environmental groups in the 70's. The reason for this is they could continue their anti big business propaganda without fears of being labelled traitors. Whether global warming is man caused or not is really immaterial to them. It's only another tool to push their socialist agendas. When you express doubt on Man caused Global Warming it's not Scientists that try and shut you up it's all these activists with a political axe to grind. Now this sounds very conspiracy theory, I know. I point to the case of Patrick Moore cofounder of GreenPeace. Moore, a true environmentalist, has distanced himself from the organization he started. Why, because GreenPeace has become a political tool with no real environmental agenda. Moore promotes Nuclear power as an environmentally friendly alternative to burning fossil fuels. GreenPeace opposes this based simply on Nuclear being associated with big utility companies. They base their opposition on fear mongering that does not fit the facts. If we had continued to build Nuke plants for the last 30 years. We wouldn't be having the problems we are now with pollution and reliance on foreign oil. GreenPeace's stance doesn't makes sense on an Environmental standpoint. They fear monger Global Warming and at the same time oppose the most reasonable solution. Why, because global warming is caused by big business, to which they are opposed. So attacking GW is attacking big business. Nuclear Power is also big business so they attack that as well. Science, facts, free speech, none of this matters to them as long they are free to twist facts to their political agenda.

  7. 80 Columns Not Enough on Are 80 Columns Enough? · · Score: 1

I work on an IBM Mainframe every day producing documents that are 133 columns buy 60 rows. You can imagine what a drag that is to be consantly scrolling left and right to view the document. It's even worse because most of the document is made of tables. You can't see the row heading on the left and the data regarding it on the right at the same time. It's easy to get the data mixed up.

I finally found a 3270 emulator that you can specify custom screen sizes. I now have mine set to 133 x 77 and can view a whole page at a time. You can imagine what a productivity increase this is.

Unfortunately or maybe fortunately, depends on your point of view, it's only available for Macintosh. This means I have the only Mac in the company which drives the IT guy's crazy.

If a catastrophe happens to the Earth. It'll be us the mice and the cockroaches as the survivors. Why us? because we can adapt from desert heat to arctic cold. Everywhere we survive, even places mice and cockroaches can't. We use our intelligence to adapt our environment to suit us. We keep ourselves toasty warm in the arctic and cool in the desert. Now we can even survive in the vacuum of space and the crushing depths of the ocean.

Hey we're off topic. ID is just a wedge the fundies are using to get their say in public schools. They want to use public schools to recruit our children, discredit science in the publics mind and fill those offering plates.
