Well considering I use both Mac & PC I think I may be qualified to answer this intelligently...
I love using my TiT books with an Airport at the studio & at home as they automatically & conveniently connect... they also seamlessly integrate with the G4 system that I have at the studio & have changed the way I think about working from the couch.
The PC I have I use for some functions but can't see what Oswald has as an issue when it comes to a "gap in the amounts and kinds of software..." - as far as standard software is concerned Mac is far superior. Also the Macs are much faster & more efficient than the PC... start up, out of sleep (especially in OSX)...
And considering that the Macs come with such an array of standard software also answers the question of $ 4 $ comparison...
I am relatively new to Mac (12 months as a first time user) & will always use both PC & Mac... but I do understand why people would stick with them... they look & work so damn sexy!!!
Video / Audio streaming... get a good professional to do it... it is like getting a cassette deck to record a band otherwise!
I'd suggest Quick Time for the Video & MP3 for the audio streaming on a stable OS (linux works great with Darwin QT server; ICE cast or Shoutcast server on linux for the MP3) & get the stuff encoded well in the first place.

http://www.icecast.org/
The ICEcast with LAME MP3 encoder (for live streams) is superior to any other quality I know for MP3 live - 22khz as opposed to 16khz... but I use Shoutcast anyway for ease of use & it gets FM quality anyway.
The Quick Time is a little bit different... it is the superior quality in streaming video if you don't go with MPEG2. Darim Vision have MPEG2 encoders (& soon MPEG4 streaming will be available) that achieve 600x800 resolution at 25 frames/sec on T1... at a price.
Otherwise I would suggest looking at a java/non plug in stream solution such as videoclipstream.

No...
it is another version & is concentrating on smaller, better quality & streamable... BUT...
DivX;-) did start this off... & I have used it successfully in the compression & export of both AVIs & MOVs from Adobe Premier 5.1.
We need to see more codecs looking along the line of streaming live as darim MPEG2 & such are doing... with MPEG 4 streaming we are looking at 1024 x 768 res at under 256kbs - that RoX!!!
What space land are you in???
The DivX;-) codec works extremely well in the export & capture process when using it with Adobe Premier 5.1
It seems that the only concern here is if the codec is used for full commercial movie features... it is in fact is a very good tool with the distribution of media online. I look forward to using the codec for the live streaming of MPEG4 in the future. At present we are constrained to low frame rate at 256kbs for 600 x 800 resolution... we see DivX;-) as being a possible improvement to that!
well... that was an enlightening bit of rubbish wasn't it... so you don't like to be flamed - does that have anything to do with the subject??? The Judge in this case has not considered Mac or even the movement for open source whether Linux or otherwise... in fact the Judge is probably a 98 user who hates it & has not seriously considered their choice... just like someones dad... this amounts to ingnorance in any situation but especially in the Judges case. If it wasn't for the many windows users out there we couldn't claim our superiority with any evidence... without criminals we couldn't be the good guys...
