the strengths of linux are in the concept. its not all about benchmarks.. its about track record.

was hired as a consultant to set up a small network for a department at a local hospital.. nothing big at all.

The OS I used on the box that housed the mail/web server was BSD... and I turned it on and left it. they didn't need to call me back for four months.. and that was because they needed to move the system to another building.

Just from personal experience, there is no way in good conscience that I could have ever just turned on an NT box and let it go. it just wouldn't have worked that way.

I just wanted to comment on: "...stability and configurability is what Apache is known for. Performance has never been a major priority."

Imagine if Apache was releasing server software comparable to MSoft's Personal Web Server. Something tiny.. unconfigurable.. and overly-simple. Sure, it may be able to serve out static documents a lot faster, but at what cost? Security and stability.. not to mention the lack of customization limits user options.

I'm not saying that PWS even compares to apache.. but what I am sayings is that speed is not the ultimate factor in networking environments.. just one of many.

Whereas IE has shown it holds itself perfectly to standards...

Well of course not... but netscape's support of HTML just .. well. It just plainly isn't as good. I dont particularly like M$ ... but I'm not going to oppose them for the sake of opposition. They make a better browser.. in almost every way.

Whether they got where they are ethically is a totally different question, but if you look at where IE is in relation to Netscape.. Its just better.

It might be a stretch to say this.. but I wish there was an IE5 for linux. Or at least something that worked better than Netscape does.

When stupid people design webbrowsers, netscape is what happens.

I design web pages.. I hardcode from the ground up. And I can honestly say that IE has longs since passed netscape by in supporting the standard.

As for your comments on corporate websites.. well, not everyone browses the web recreationally. Some people need to go to some websites.. and since all windows users have IE, even the netscape users are more likely to just pop open an IE session that to boycott a site.

Heheh.. No. I'd have to disagree. Strip the bastard down. Interface-wise.. and then actually show some sort of effort to support at the very least standard HTML (which netscape is just atrocious at)

The user interface doesn't need any more buttons. No one uses the little Shop button they just recently threw up there.. etc etc etc.

The personal taskbar is good.. let a user build his interface (as, I believe IE5/Win2k allows a user to do).

    Whoa whoa whoa....

The moral issue is: is it right to punish Microsoft for using its well-earned influence in one market to promote its product in another market?

Actually, whether they were using thier well-earned influence in one market to promote thier product in another.. was not the issue. The issue was not whether or not they were a monopoly. The basic "moral" issue here was whether or not Microsoft used their influence to simply strong arm away any other competition and maintain thier monopoly... which is both illegal.. and in the realm of morality, shady at best. imran

Actually, as a side note, RedHat 6.1 does pull up a local jump page when you start up netscape.
