  1. HP won't lose a cent on HP To Pay German Antipiracy Fee For CD Burners · · Score: 1

Why is anyone (rather alomst everyone) whining that it isn't fair to HP, and HP shoul dbe p'oed. They only people who will suffer are German consumers who will have to pay more for their CD-R/W now. HP merely raises the prices to make up the difference.

  2. Patent Application #6 on Squatting On Life · · Score: 3
    PATENT APPLICATION SUBMITTED TO USPTO

    Date: 1/06/00

Patented Submitted By: God (insert name of preferred deity)

    Patent Numbers: 6, 6.1, 6.2

    Patent #6 - Genome
This patent covers a series of molecule particles combined in such a way as to provide pattern or blue print which through cascading effects eventually produce a functional human being. These sequences will be referred to henceforth as Genomes. The exact sequence of these molecules is controlled by patent #6.1, the HEA (Human Encryption Algorithm)

Patent #6.1 - Human Encryption Algorithm
Patent 6.1 covers the HEA or Human Encryption Algorithm. The HEA is an asymmetric encryption algorithm which takes for input two genetically signed Genomes (Genetic Signatures are generated though the HEA encryoption of an individual's Genome). The algorithm will then produce a new Genome that is a unique combination of the two input Genomes. Application of the HEA Algorithm, and the signing process are patented under patent number 6.2, Genome Transmission Protocol.

Patent #6.2 - Genome Transmission Protocol.
This section has been classified TOP SECRET and is being held until the NSA has determined if application of the GTP can be used safely in public society. You can be sure we will be testing the Genome Transmission Protocol extensively to determine its security.Umh, we are also accepting applications for Security Enhancement Experiment Partners for this testing program. Please send resume, and photograph, to ADDRESS CLASSIFIED.

Screwing with S-boxes has actually been shown to weaken DES significantly. Just changing the order of S-boxes in DES has been shown to significantly weaken DES encryption. Schneier gives an excellent discussion of this in his Applied Cryptography...

  4. Slower Systems?! HAHAHAHHAHAHAHA on New 3D Cards On Slower PCs · · Score: 1

I love how Celeron and AMD 700 Mhz systems are considered the "slower" systems now. My gawd, I'd love to have either one at work or home. Hilarious. Do the people running these things even have a clue that the corporate standard is stil the p2-333 or so? Or that the personal standard is a whopping 100Mhz faster at around 800Mhz? Frums

  5. Shoul dbe easy in theory on Boycott of Music Industry's Hacker Challenge Urged · · Score: 2
Unless they are going to create new drivers, copying this is as easy as running it in a sandbox and intercepting the input to the sound card drivers. While this by itself is not easy (talk to the wonderful creators of WINE for making a good windows sandbox) it is quite possible. I mention WINE in particular because if they are making new formats we all know perfectly well that the only player they will release will be for Windows. Actually, on that thought, WINE might be the best place to build this.

In theory they would have to alter the sound to leave a permanent mark. If that is the case it is merely a task of identifying the mark and playing with SoundForge.

Anyway. I personally am against a boycott. The honor system for payment is not sufficient (despite Stephen King's wishes), and moving to a new media is a good thing. Help them out. Besides, I am personally rather curious at whether or not they can pull it off.

I did a lot of research recently in a different field, Education, but it meshes with the discussion here for a very good reason. I pretty much formed the opinion that most Cato studies are politically based studies mor ein the form of pseudo-science than real research. Almost every time you read one of their studies it mentions who had the study done, and every time the study was funded by someone who the "results" would benefit politically.

I pointed this out amongst other grad students and profs and discovered from some profs that the Cato institute has a reputation as being researchers for hire, who will "prove" anything for you if you have the bucks. -Frums

You are right on with the SLA idea, except it will fly over the heads of almost all non-brit gamers, even die-hards. For some reason SLA never seemed to get much of a following outside Britain. It's probably because the various books fell apart before they could make it across the water... -Frums

I saw Shanghai Noon yesterday as well, and while I loved it, jackie is slowing down A LOT in his old age.

Jet Li has pretty much taken over the fighting title Jackie Chan had, but Jackie still rocks.
