Don't think about disk I/O on mainframes the same way you do on PC architecture. These puppies are built to pump enormous amounts of data in and out of very fast drive arrays. It's not an IDE or even a fast SCSI RAID. FIber channel, and HPPI(i think). Throughput that will blow your hair off. (What's left of it)
This idea is so clueless, on so many levels... oh where do I start?
Does the 'Amateur Radio Community' have many millions of dollars for upkeep of the ground-based systems, technician's salaries, etc.?
Are the 'Hams' a 501c3 or equivalent charity, such that the donation would be a tax deduction larger than the one they get on the loss?
How in God's green earth is a LEO sat telephone system a 'new toy to play with'?
Assuming all the things you propose actually made sense, what do you do when they start falling out of the sky, on thier own, in the coming years? These aren't in geostationary orbit. They are getting dragged down by the atmosphere. They will burn up.
There is a socioeconomic divide between haves and have-nots right now. That divide is about to become biological. And for the subrace (plain-vanilla humanity) that we are about to transcend, the future doesn't look good.
Interesting... There is some thought that that is what happened between the Neanderthal and the Cro-Magnon. That the ascendency of Cro-Magnon had less to do with traditional biological evolution and more to do with sociological issues. I would post references, but I'm too lazy to look them up.
Bill Joy wrote vi when Linus Torvalds was still in diapers, if not sooner. --RANT ON-- What is up with this Linux-centric view of the world? I am sick to death of the short-sighted, open-source zealots with no sense of proporttion or knowledge of history.
This has some promise, although geeks are present in such a wide variety of endeavours. There are geeks here who have never written a line of code, in any language. They are hardware hackers, or network engineers. Some of us are programmers, but we are also graphic designers, writers, or editors. The problem of the disparate community comes back. It is difficult, if not impossible to get a coherent voice from such a diverse community.
We don't all have similar viewpoints. Some of us are students, some have been professional programmers for many years. Some of us are conservative Christians, some are liberal athiests, some are conservative Jews, others are liberal Wiccans. Some are Democrats, some are Republicans, and there are a lot who are not US citizens, and I appologize for not know the names and affiliations of many foriegn political organizations. The key is to be the technology expert in the groups you are a part of. Join up with each other when you agree, and disagree vehemently when you don't. (most around here are very good at that!)
Mod this Up. This is the crux of the matter. The audience just here on/. is so widely distributed that finding common ground on technical matters is near impossible. Extend that to ethical, legal, moral and political considerations and you have an unsolvable situation. I am probable at odds with most/. readers, in that I have no particular problem with the MPAA or the RIAA, in thier efforts to protect intellectual property and the revenue stream artists and producers deserve. (No flames on this, it's an example.)
I prefer to focus my political energy on issues which have a moral and constitutional component, something I can compare against my belief system. I suspect many others are in the same situation.
There may never be a 'Geek Lobby'. But there may develop a coalition of 'Geek Lobbies', which work together when common goals arise, and part company on the partcular issues which they feel strongest about. I might support increased vigilance over internet taxation measures, have no opinion about MPAA IP issues, and vehemently oppose some other geeks on library or school system censoring.
My suggestion: We actively seek out the geeks who are already aligned with our own political ideals, and create a subnet, bringing the geek perspective when required, and informing our fellow geeks in a more intelligent manner.
Have you ever seen Windows do anything useful in safe mode?
Seriously, you are right. Whatever we call the next OS, it must have a bullet-proof kernel. The multi-layered onion drawings in my dim memory come to mind. The separation between layers has, so far never been as clean as the diagrams show. Drag-n-drop for device drivers, that's the ticket. We're not there yet.
Man was created in God's image. Animals were not. Man is the only living being with an eternal soul. Man is the only living being with moral choice and free will.
I'm gonna get flamed for this, but Truth is Truth, and must be proclaimed.
Paying for the PRO version is more than just an upgraded Player. It enables a large number of authoring features.
I wish I were moderating today. This is Insightful.

idiot.
Macintosh came out in 1984. Not 1976. There were Apple computers before the Macintosh.

Those were the days...
