Um, I Mr. Johnny Lee is a master hacker. In context, I will humbly mention my own effort in this area, using a simple webcam and projector (no Wiimote). I have spent a lot of time going through NKS, and the feeling I got was the same one when I used to pour through my father's fat reference books on cell biology or human anatomy. It's more of a reference book, which treats automatons as species, genera and perhaps even tribes of attractors. NKS is an encyclopaedic dictionary of automatons, but it has very little to offer by way of "new science".

I think generative process algorithms (automatons etc) will be fundamental to the kind of engineering you are talking about.
