I think the biggest criticism from "outsiders" or those new to it would be ease of use; having some sort of graphical program that could:
* Know what you have installed
* Have some sort of standardised library whereby
"plugins" (or modules, or whatever) could provide to the program the information needed about the layout of a particular vendor's default machine, as well as any peculariaties in the format of their packaging system.
Sort of like the Perl::DBI and ODBC etc. That way, if new package formats come out. or a vendor changes the layout of their filesystem, then it would be a simple matter of changing the "plugin" for it.
Modularised seems to be the way to go these days: kernel, jabber, licq and I'm sure there's others too.

Sure, we don't have the enormous pool of musical talent that the US might have, but remember - we number less than 10% total population compared to the US.
