  1. Re:Though is some places? on Nevada Governor to Bill Fossett Widow For Search · · Score: 1

SAR is not always (or even usually) charged for in Colorado. From the state State Search and Rescue Fund FAQ (http://www.dola.state.co.us/dlg/fa/sar/index.html):

Will I be billed for expenses related to my rescue?

Some municipalities and special taxing districts have billed victims for some expenses related to their rescue. We are unaware of a volunteer search and rescue team who has billed a victim for costs the team has incurred. In all cases, the Colorado Search and Rescue Fund attempts to reimburse on all eligible expenses to prevent billing of victims. The fund is unable to reimburse any salary, overtime or stipend paid to any person permanently employed by a SAR agency or political subdivision of the state. In addition, the fund does not reimburse indirect operating expenses, such as stand-by costs, of vehicles and equipment owned by a local government.

Also, see the Colorado Search and Rescue Board (http://www.coloradosarboard.org/) website for why charging for SAR is a bad idea. Basically, if you charge, people who need help will go out of their way to not be found. The SAR teams end up wasting their time (plus cost increase) and the people that need help end up in worse shape.

So, if I bought a book by Stephen Ambrose, who has been accused of plagiarism, can the 'original' author sue me? It seems to me that plagiarism is the same as or similar to the type of copyright infringement that SCO is suing about. The book I bought isn't covered by any type of license that I'm aware of, and as far as I know, I have nothing that indemnifies me from any copyright infringement that might be in the book. Or if there are laws that protect me personally from legal action in owning a book that contains plagiarized text, why would I be personally liable from using a Linux kernel that may contain some of SCO's copyrighted code? After all, I obtained both in the good faith understanding that I wasn't intentionally committing some type of legal offense (or crime).

I've read that future editions of Ambrose's works will contain the correct attributions. How is this different that the potentially offending code being removed from the Linux kernel? And as far as I know there still isn't anything that compels me to purchase the newly corrected edition of the book. That would seem to leave it up to me to either upgrade/downgrade my kernel or not...

I could not reach that page all of last night. But my connection was active till at least 2:30am mountain (Denver area). However, it looks to be dead this morning. I have all the normal lights on the modem, but can't reach anything.

I used my dialup access to check that help page again and while it had changed from yesterday morning, it still said there had been no decision to disconnect. It did mention that credit would be issued for service disruptions (2 free days for each day down) and that they did not expect anyone to be down more than 1 to 14 days. I would paste the whole thing here, but I'm back to not being able to connect to the help page again.

Oh, and once I'm on dial-up I can ping my normal DNS servers. Just not when I'm on my cable connection.

I also agree. Learn what can be found on any Unix system (Bourne shell, vi, etc). Try several different flavors, specifically focusing on BSD vs. SysV variants. Learn the differences between the system startup routines (init directory, conf files, etc.). It seems every time I sit down with a different Unix I have to spend a bit of time making the system startup and run the way I need it too. So poking around in the init/rc/conf directories and knowing how to tune the system is a good way to learn some of the basics.

As for the vi comment... I personally believe that vi creates some type of addictive dependancy. It is an awful editor. Yet I still use, and even like it! Why else would this be?
