The problem is, nobody knows what they're talking about. The beauty of the Linux kernel is that it's absolutely free. We're used to seing it on PC's, but it's being used on PDA's and web devices, as well as embedded systems more and more, because of this freedom. Obviously, running linux in an embedded system or web-device is going to be a bit, if not almost completely different then running it on a PC.
Compared to those types of systems, the difference between slackware and red hat are small issues. So there's a different package utility...companies will have to make the decision if they are going to spend more money on different package-types or restrict thier sales to one distro. Companies are already ONLY supporting rpm, and then also releasing a tar.gz format for everyone else.
Being a slackware guy, this is annoying, but I can deal with it. People will use the distro that is the most supported, and the people who like to endure pain for some slight advantages will do their own thing.
This is a good thing, windows users don't get these types of options:)
If you don't hesitate to yell at pacbell, you won't have too rough of a time. Most of the DSL complaints I hear from people usually involve intermittent service and the high cost. For me, PacBell has been very nice.
I subscribed during a promotion almost a year ago, 1.5/384 with 5 ip addeys for about $70 a month. I hear 384/128 is between $30 and $40 or so. The service is usually down for about an hour a month (usually when I need it most), but rarely is it down for more than an hour.
I have moved several times while having this service, and each time it's taken about a month for them to get my dsl installed. It would have taken longer, had I not called them every two days and yelled at them (VERY annoying). Also, they apparantly bilieve I am getting too good of a deal now (1.5/384 costs signifigantly more, usually) and whenever I move, they try to push me out of my contract, but once again the "get angry" method has worked to set them straight.
PacBell DSL is nice, while the service sucks, but if you don't plan on ever calling techsupport or moving a lot, then it's just fine. Also, DSL companies are ALWAYS throwing promotions to get new subscribers, so look around, there are some really good deals out there.
For those of you that weren't there, I put some pictures up of our trip up. There's not a lot, I haven't updated it since sat night (I should be putting up some more pics after lunch). Also I should probably consider replacing the page with html that's written while sober. Hmmmm.....
I'd love to be able to read this in english....I don't know what's on the site, but if someone could translate some specs (if there are any) it would be really nice.
As much as I agree with richard on this one (amazon crossed the line), I am forced to ask the question: where does richard stallman buy groceries. It seems that if something isn't gnu he's boycotting it. I'd respect a boycott more if it came from someone like linus, cus I'm kind of sick of stallman's watchdog behavior.

I vote to establish "no-fly zones" over penguin colonies, as I don't want to disturb the cute little buggers
