The engine itself burning Hydrogen has no problem in terms of power or efficiency.
The energy efficiency of creating, storing and transporting hydrogen is a problem. It takes more than twice the energy to get it to you as you get out of using it. So where does that energy come from? Power plants, which in the US are largely coal or oil burning. So the over all polution and carbon cost is comparable to a gasoline car.
