Suppose the chip does increase parents' confidence in television content; kids will probably watch more TV. They'll be exposed to more ads. And they're going to nag their parents to buy more chocolate-coated sugar bombs and Barbie dolls.
The truth is advertising affects everyone (much more than we admit too ourselves), but kids are more susceptible because they haven't learned to criticize their environment.
I find Barbie advertisements much more offencive than most television programs. I would be more horrified if my daughter asked for a Baribe, then if she asked why all those people are being mean too each other on the news--at least I would have the chance to explain the latter.
BSD software is `ok' because Microsoft can use that code. Like the TCP/IP stack, and kerberos code that was borrowed for Windows 2000. But those poor inovative coders at microsoft will have to code their own versions of GNU software from scratch! Those poor muffins..
So when is Microsoft going to publish Windows 2000 on a BSD-style licence again?
The most important thing about code is style: it should be easy to read, easy to change, and easy to debug. This is true of any code, not just web code.
Effeciency--or the so called `constants' in big-oh notation--should always be delt with last. To help in the battle against slow code, there are optimising compilers (such as php4's zend engine, and the standard C compliers), and profiles to help identify bottle necks. But if your code isn't clean, you're going to have a hell of a time doing any optimising.
Does the US have a "Kids Help Line"? In Canada, it's this toll-free number kids are encouraged to call anonymously if they're having any trouble. Its corner stones are listening and counseling rather than an intervention.
Maybe it would be a better idea to encourage school children to call in on that line, where they could be encouraged to support the person they're calling about (who's abviously in a difficult situation) or call the police, as appropriate. (Read: it's usually the former..)
Ok, GNU has cloned UNIX products since the begining of time, Microsoft and Apple have cloned X-features a while back, and now we're borrowing UI detail from Microsoft. Is this news?
I hit three record stores in Toronto this weekend. An HMV, a Sam's, and small second-hand store on Bloor street. You know what was interesting? They *all* have listening posts where you can ask to listen to an album before buying it.
We all know that if we buy an album, chances are most of it will be crap (except for the song you bought it for.) Of course, there are exceptions.. so could it be mp3s are letting people be more confidant in their purchases?
I have no clue where to find these things out, but as you said.. so long as they own public corperations in Western countries we should be able to find out.
I was thinking of just using 'controlling interest' as a criteria.. so that if someone had a controlling intrest in company A, but A has a controlling interest in B, we just list A and B in that guy's portfolio. I'll bet these people don't like the spotlight very much, and it would be nice to have them scrutinised as much as our politians. Then, personal relationships will be reported by the media.. which is also helpful.
Most of the world's businesses are controled by a small number of families. Maybe we should find out who owns most of Toshiba and start applying a little bit of pressure there. Maybe we should map out and publish the lines of influence between all these individuals. Knowledge is Power.
So did I hear it right you weren't given a chance to talk to your lawyers? I don't know my international law.. but in most countries that's illegal. Good luck to you. M

V-Chips shouldn't replace parents, but they will.
That's right. Inco donated the old nickel mine.
Good grief.. those Queens Engineers (from Kingston) think Ontario revolves around them.
Contrary to popular belief, the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory is close to.. Sudbury Ontario! I think both Ottawa and Toronto are closer than Kingston.
Got pole?

Of course.. why didn't I think of that?!

Don't you mean: One Ping to rule them all, One Ping to find them, One Ping to bring them all and in the darkness BIND them. (With appologies to UF.)

Agreed. Know your rights, and stand your ground.

More is less. Resistance is futile.
