  1. How this could be a good thing on Internet Printer Protocol · · Score: 1

    It could be a good thing if it was like lpd, except that it had a universal page description language (Ok, like lpd+gs fiter, but in the printer). Something like PostScript, that would be converted to the local printer language. This language, of course, couldn't have the capability, as in PS, of being vulnerable do malicious code.
    Because otherwise you will have to install many different drivers in your winblows box: PS, PCL, epson, canon, etc..

    And better control access.

    But people already print too much. We need better displays, not printers..

    Cmon, writing in /. is a great thing, 1000s of listeners with lots of spare time to hear whatever people say. How many books did Kats sold just to /. readers? I didnt buy it, but I believe many did.

  3. Brazil created new "top" level domains in 98 on 4 Millionth Domain Name · · Score: 1

    Here in Brazil, inside the .br hierarchy, there were the .com.br, .org.br, .net.br "top" level domains. Well, they decided it was not enough, and created new ones.
    .art.br -> Art
    .ind.br -> industries
    .nom.br -> from "nome" (name) for personal pages.
    and many others etc.. some are really confusing, like .psi.br (it could mean "psicologos", but it actually is "provedor de servicos internet" (isp).

    The moral of the story is: If you can't make it good, don't do it..

  5. MS doesn't give a damn about Linux! on MS Office for Linux · · Score: 1

    C'mon, do you believe in the halloween documents? Do you believe in this Office story? The only time when MS remembers the existance of Linux is when it mentions it on trial. "Linux is no threat to MS.. Oh, wait a minute.. Linux is a big threat to MS and so there is no monopoly.."

    That's funny.
    Have you noticed that the acronym OSS has been first used in the halloween memos?

  6. Open standard alternative? write an RFC.. on Escient (CDDB company) trying to monopolize market? · · Score: 1

    This service is really simple to implement. why can't someone write a RFC suggesting it? There could be a network of servers, etc..

    Or is it patented?

  8. Dvorak? Oh, you mean the keyboard layout! on Does Dvorak really know what Transmeta is Doing? · · Score: 1

    Cmon,

    This is just Dvoraks opinion, and his opinions are usually wrong. He thinks he know the most closed kept secret in the known universe. RISC chip? Every newer x86 chip is internally RISC.
    x86 is dead. Even Intel knows that, thats why they are working with HP.

    We all know the truth. Transmeta is run by Aliens, and what they are actually doing is choosing which is the next Alien technology they will bring us. (The first was Linux)

  9. It took me 3/2 yrs to get pppd working on The Road To Linux -- The Summit, but not the Peak · · Score: 1

    My modems factory default didnt use hw fc, one day I fixed it, and it worked ever since.

    About kppp quiting, he should check the presence of the "lock" option on ppp. The way kppp controls access to the device is really nonstandard.
