This book has been around for a while, but I still think it is perfectly relevant. Particularly so when managing educated professionals like programmers.

Of course, you have to take my advice with a grain of salt. I was a manager for a while, then happily transitioned back to being a developer -- over thirty years in IT now. As a manager you're really only as good as your worst subordinate. I never could get used to having my success be outside of my own control. That's probably a personal limitation.
