I track my gas mileage on gasaroo.com That site gives me nice graphs and comparison charts over time.

  4. Re:The internet bubble is back in force! on Facebook On The Block · · Score: 1

    Are you nuts?

Marketing is such a fuzzy, oblique concept. You can't just pour money into a product and guarantee success.

The reality is that facebook.com, myspace.com, flickr.com, and kingwoodyardsales.com all grew because friends brought their friends. You can't pay money for that. It's not for sale. Even bribing people to bring their friends doesn't work like the genuine real deal.

If it were that easy, the internet would be a whole different game.

  5. Local Stuff Happening on Building the "Social Internet" From the Outside In · · Score: 2, Insightful

"Local" seems to be big everywhere now. Craigslist, Google Base and Local, Yahoo Local, ebay local, are all the big guys targetting the local market. Rumors of local news aggregates are growing hot as well....

I'm in Houston, and I'm a fan of the popular Kingwood Yard Sales, which is site targetted at a specific community (there are several others around Houston and in other parts of the US). Judy's Book is the "big metropolitan" model, like Craigslist. Some big newspapers I know are aiming at the local online community market as well, trying to stay above water.

The big question for big companies is "where is the money?" which has left the opportunity for small players to fill the niche left behind...the "long tail"...

  6. Her own announement on Publisher Renames 'Katie.com' · · Score: 5, Informative
She posted her own personal announcement on the site she really owns.

Today I am very excited to announce that Katie.com will be re-released and re-named A Girl's Life Online. From the beginning, I hoped that Penguin and Katie Jones would be able to resolve this issue. I never believed that I had any right to the name Katie.com as a website but simply viewed it to be the name of my book. That being said, I never wanted anyone to experience unwanted emails or traffic on the Internet. As someone who has been abused, I would certainly not wish to cause anybody pain. Therefore, I sincerely apologize to Katie Jones for any suffering she may have endured.

That's a little different than the slashing perpetrator Slashdot has cast her. Refreshing to know the good guys do win....sometimes.

  10. No recourse for fraud on EBay Letting Fraud Slide? · · Score: 3, Interesting

The truth is, ebay has limited recourse against fraud. So they can disable an account or block certain users, or blast their karma.

Us ("we") customers want financial recourse (i.e. our money back), and they can only do that if they control the cash flow.

Right now they don't, so they can't.
