You have summed up my dilemma exactly, brother. I have been working in IT for just about as long and in many of the same roles and have almost quit twice this year. I'm at a point in my career where I'm making good money and just bought a house, so it would be irresponsible to do anything rash.
My issue is more that I hate IT but love technology. When I say IT I mean the end users, change management and politics. Unfortunately end users never seem to go away.
The only thing that has made it sufferable (besides the paycheque) is taking the technology home (home automation, media PCs and building my own 'toys'). Playing with some of the bleeding edge technology helps take the sting out of 9 to 5.
