    Am I the only one who is bored beyond tears with these Mars revelations?

    My guess is that the vast majority of non-nerds are just as bored with extraplantery discoveries as you. The majority here though are probably keen to get as many of these science stories as they can.

    Probably would mostly depend on where you live and the pervading philosophical views of your peers. I'd say for the adult it would be optional but for the unborn it would be mandatory. Interesting how you didn't include the father in the "does not want to have it fixed" scenario. Does the owner of only half of the contributing genome wishes take precedence? If so, why?

    To those who talk about this encouraging mining remember, the more you have a something the less valuable it tends to be. Sure gold has many industrial uses, but its main value is its perceived relative scarcity. Change that and you will essentially achieve the opposite of the alchemist's dream and turn gold into lead.

    How does that not make him more worthy of the prize? Aren't most wars started due to secret ambitions? It just makes sense to me that when country A says it wants C, country B will try harder to protect C. It's when B doesn't doesn't know that A wants C that causes violence to arise.,

    The proverb goes "He who is without sin cast the first stone." The simple fact is there is not one adult person who follows a religion on this world who hasn't broken one of the tenants in which they profess to believe. Yet they are most often the very ones who condemn those who view their faith as superstitius nonesense the most vehemently. I do have to give this to the Catholic Church though, they have become much more maleable when confronted with facts that contradict their beliefs than the sects that spun of from it.

    You are right, UN mandates are only as strong as the guns that support them. And, since most of the world believes as you do that private ownership supersedes public, you can rest assured that those "grab them" claims to ownership will be defended. Wouldn't it be nice if we could all just get along?

    I run Windows 7 right now. I see absolutely zero compelling reasons to upgrade to Windows 8, and plenty of compelling reasons not to. I don't have to switch to Linux for Microsoft to lose out on my money. I just have to not buy any more of their products.

    P.S. Lest I lose all of my Slashdot cred, I should point out that I dual-boot.

    Congrats for finally seeing the light. I, and many others, have been refusing to give Microsoft any dollars since the mid nineties. Sadly they still manage to survive.

    Secure Boot is just another attempt by Microsoft to maintain their near monopoly on computer operating systems. They are failing to compete, severely, so have no choice but to find some method that will force people to continue to be blessed by Microsoft before being free to use the devices they purchased. Take the planned new XBox as an example of their obsession with control.

    As much as I respected Nokia for their hardware manufacturing prowess, I have to admit I am a cheerleader for their demise as the price for jumping in bed with the devil. I still haven't found a decent device to replace my N900. Search for "unlocked cellphone with hardware keyboard" and you will understand the problem. Oracle, it seems, will be next to join the illustrious many who have died at the hand of Microsoft.

    To me Civ3 was the ultimate in gaming fun. Certainly Civ4 was easier to play on Linux, but they so overdid the graphics that gameplay seemed to be a secondary consideration. As for Civ5, my understanding is that they severly restricted the ability to build decent armies.

    In some cases it means you haven't lived half your life yet, in others it means you haven't lived a third of it. Which is closer to the truth for you depends quite a bit on the society in which you live. Either way, 29 is a quite a tender age in the overall grand view of things.

    The reason insurance works is it spreads the risk equally between those who are less likely to submit claims and those who are more likely to file them. Your young worker paying affordable premiums now would be very likely unable to afford them if he only paid in when he needed benefits.
