I played WoW for about 6 months before I got bored and went back to FFXI. Am I a masochist? Well I spend two and a half years and 900 million gil getting a Mandau so yes probably. But the fact remains WoW was too easy for me.
Apparently there is a market for this because half a million people play the game and it attracts a steady stream of new users.
The problem with replacing the old gear is that some of it is so high powered that adding anything stronger would require a re balancing of the game to compensate. (eg. Hecatomb harness set, Adaman plate set) and some equipment takes so long to get that rendering it obsolete would cause people to quit. (eg. any relic weapon)
I mean, if SE suddenly released a better dagger than Mandau, I would cancel my account the next day. It tool me 2 and a half years of doing dynamis and over 900 million gil to get that thing. There's no way I would keep playing if it suddenly became worthless. (understand that relics are extremely hard to get and extremely rare. There are only a few hundred of them across all servers)
As for new areas not adding worthwhile gear, the Homam and Nashira sets from Limbus (CoP) and the salvage sets from TaU are equal to anything from the RoZ areas only in different ways (eg. Homam is all haste and ACC). And the Ares set is like a Koenig and Adaman set welded together, it's good DD armor and good tanking armor all in one set.
