Dan Hildebrand (note the spelling) was hired to go work at Quantum Software in the late 80's. He originally worked at a firm here in Winnipeg called Vansco Electronics where I first met him. He raved about this neat thing called QNX and within weeks (and a beer or two:)) I was a convert.
I like to refer to him as my "mentor" as he was the man that first got me into Unix-ish OSs. Unfortunately Dan passed away in 1998. You can read the QNX page dedicated to him at:
http://www.qnx.com/danh/
I didn't keep in touch with him much after he left Winnipeg to move to Ottawa and QNX but I wouldn't be doing what I do had it not been for him.
If a website gets money from banner advertising and can come up with a juicy tidbit to get more hits then they are indeed profiting from the stolen property.
Information wants to be free, but those that own the information are the only ones that can legally release it in the first place.
If someone from 20th Century leaked copies of Star Wars Episode One, should Lucas, et al, not be able to sue everyone that misuses their property? ie: the theaters that sneak preview the movie as well as just the person responsible for the leak?
Love Apple or Hate them, they have every right in the world to protect what is rightfully theirs.
* But if you don't believe like I do, and I turn out to be right, you lose everything.
Based on your statement I would suggest that religion is the coward's path. You don't want to take a stand you you embrace god(s) as an insurance policy.
Regardless, from my side of the fence you "lose" more than I. We're both dead, but you've wasted countless hours on your knees talking to a non-existant god.
* I have personally experienced, and am constantly experiencing the Divine. I feel the Divine Energy, Breath of Life, Chi, Force, whatever you'd like to call it flowing through me, and through everything that surrounds me. And there you are telling me it doesn't exist.
Divine was a transvestite that ate dog feces in John Waters' "Pink Flamingos" Regardless, the "Divine" you feel flowing through you is a sign of good mental health. Don't sell yourself short by suggesting it's thanks to a supreme being floating in the sky or the sandalled kook that was nailed up on a cross claiming to be the son of the invisible man.
If someone were to suggest that the cat I had in my lap didn't exist I would think they need glasses or a mental examination. Not unlike those that believe in gods.
Religion is keeping a good chunk of humanity in the dark ages. Turn your back on the controlling lies religion teaches and free your mind.
Hah! I think it is obvious I see further than you my deluded friend. Believe what you want, but when you are lying on your deathbed wishing you did something more with your wasted Sunday mornings, remember me. You are in error. The church did not execute Galileo because of his calculations, but instead because he was using them to attack religion. If he had just stuck with using them to obtain results he would have been fine. There's a fine distinction there, but an important one. Sir, YOU are in error. the church did not execute Galileo at all, nor did I say they did. Regardless, if the church executes all those that attack it, do you really condone this? Do you suggest that I would be worth of execution because I do not believe there is an invisible man floating in the sky? The close mindedness of the follower of Christian Mythology shows it's true colours. I'm always amazed at the number of otherwise intelligent people that believe in ghosts, goblins, and invisible deities. I'm always amazed at the number of otherwise intelligent people that believe in quarks, gluons, leptons and invisible forces. Proving their existance, if even mathematically, is more than the proof any church can offer of a god. Saying one must have faith simply acknowledges the fact that religion can't stand up on it's own merits. Nonsense. You have "faith" in science don't you? Whether or not you believed in science would make no difference to its objective truth. Similarly, whether or not people have faith makes no difference to the Truth. I have no "faith" in science. Science tests itself every day by the onus of proof. Numbers don't lie, religion does. Faith is required for following the path of the Lord and being allowed into Heaven. It's not required, but the consequences of its lack is eternal damnation. There you go, bringing unmeasurable "faith" into the mix. A favourite ploy by religious kooks. This has been a wonderful troll, thank you for allowing me to vent.
Egads... More blind people spewing out their Christian Mythology.
For hundreds of years science has been chipping away at religion. The church was ready to execute Galileo in the name of a god. Only recently did the Pope apologize.

We're born, we eat, we breed, we die. End of story.
I want them to send up a can of Spam (or Spam Lite if fat content is a concern). When the can of Spam (or Spam Lite) makes it back to earth it can be tested for microbial growth and then consumed by the scientists. No waste[0]!

[0] no waste if you don't count the hundreds of tonnes of fuel needed to get the can of Spam (or Spam Lite) into orbit in the first place.
I used MKLinux for a while when it first came out. It was a bit pokey but it was nice to use a _nix-ish OS on my old Mac 6100-66 (nb: the old link to www.mklinux.apple.com is dead) On an older Quadra I have NetBSD 68K running. (see Recently, I tried LinuxPPC2000 on my G3 at home and it just flat out failed. A search of dejanews and various archives were of no help. I'll just wait for OpenBSD PPC. There is a NetBSD port to the PowerPC Mac already, but OpenBSD's developers seem to be more paranoid than I am. I find that very reassuring.:)
Many years ago when Xerox brought out it's first copy machines the book publishing community tried to have them banned or severly controlled.
The reason? Secretaries of the day, which were predominantly female, copied recipes from cookbooks for one another in the offices.
When Sony brought out the Betamax for home use the television media cried foul and tried to have them severely restricted.
When digital audio tape (DAT) first appeared, the recording industries tried to have copy protection built into them.
I find it highly ironic that in many cases the ones that benefit from the technologies are the ones that initially fought to keep them from seeing the light of day.
How does an open source free os go bankrupt? Methinks your toy hobbyist OS has addled your brain. Please wipe the drool from your chin and go to http://www.freebsd.org for a bit of enlightenment.
That's right kiddies, whine and bitch all you want about his comments, the simple fact of the matter is without Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, et al, Linux would not exist. Linux's source code is a mess of varying quality. Perhaps he's commenting on old kernel versions, I don't know nor will I presume to speak for him. Just remember that Linux is a Unix clone and without these men, Unix would not exist. Thank goodness for the sanity of the FreeBSD world.
Waaahhhhh!
I'm going to stomp my feet and take away all my toys!
Waaahhhhh!
Sheesh, get your mommy to change your diapers, you're far, far too cranky and you're embarassing yourself.
Man Cowie, you're still bitter all this time after leaving distributed.net? Perhaps an anger management course is in order.

When I submitted the story (with link to another page) it wasn't considered newsworthy.
You can most certainly copyright a photograph. Does Playboy not go after websites that illegally duplicate it's photographs?
Rubbish!

2000-07-27 12:42:28 FreeBSD 4.1-RELEASE is out! (bsd,bsd)
:(
I guess my notification was passed over.
Good to see Nvidia swallow some pride and own up to their mistakes. Well done Nvidia!
(semi-related I have an antiquated Mac 68040 running NetBSD off an old 100 MB SCSI Zip drive which works very well.)
If you want to make a hard diskless router or workstation you can get PicoBSD, essentially a stripped FreeBSD-on-a-floppy.
http://people.FreeBSD.org/~picobsd/picobsd.html
I have set up a few NATD/IPFW boxes on old 486es using this.
Mac IIe? I think you mean an Apple IIe which is NOT a Mac.
