Put Steelhead mobile on all the clients. Document transfer over the VPN will GREATLY improve. Since it's mostly text/pictures, there will be so much duplicate data that doesn't need to be transferred over the wire multiple times, the round trip time will decrease so much they'll forget they're on a VPN.
They compared it to Server v1? That's an unfair comparison. When you stack a hypervisor on top of another OS, yeah, there's going to be overhead. Probably too much overhead for a production server. Compare it to ESX3.5 or even ESX3i, then we'll talk.
Those work great, if every device in your network meets those standards. I for one would not make a network dependent on SNMP, which most of the ones you mentioned are. It's painfully simple for someone else to find out all those details!
