I wanted to find and beat the crap out of the guy who made it available.
thats probably what you should do, well at least sue him. But don't sue the newspaper that writes about it. Or google, that indexed the page where the bad guy posted it.
Go after the bad guy, not the service provider. You wouldn't sue the ISP that served the guy that copied your work, you would sue the guy that copied your work.

1. The thing that makes me think is - will they be building machines without copy protection outside of the US ? I _bet_ they won't. So we Europeans will be affected and can't do _anything_ about it. THAT'S my problem.
2. What will this new hardware do to Linux and will Open Source still be possible and legal after this law passed ?
The US government is taking away consumer rights one after the other. After following these things here on Slashdot I'm _really_ happy to live in Europe, but that won't help me in the long-term since nowadays US laws can be enforced everywhere it seems.
microprocessors that run faster and consume less power than conventional ones. The technology solves two of the more intractable problems: power consumption and heat.
This does sound familiar. Remember the two advantages of clockless chips discussed a few weeks ago on Slashdot?
less power consumption
less heat
faster processors
The article, on the other hand, says it's (only ?) because of a substitute for the silicium wafer. Well we'll have to wait and see what AMD has got in it's pocket waiting to be shown.
it seems to me that a lot of people who understand alot of one (or more) of the nature sciences forget that it's all just observation and interpretation.
And I guess it's not those people that find out about completely new things that break all the other previouslyassumed 'laws'. If there wouldn't be anysceptics, we wouldn't have come this farand I guess if there aren't more scepticsto come, we wouldn't even advance in science.
wouldn't the amount of evergy available be based on the voltage supplied to the computer and the resistance of its circuits? so wouldn't the relevant equation be V=IR, not E=MC2?
don't think using electricity here, we're talking about particle physics and quantum computers. so forget all your cables and contacts and resistors. He's talking about states of nuclei (being the spin of the nucleus for example)If you convert all the mass to energy (pure energy, that is) then you've got the maximum energy. you can't have a higher energy, cause you don't got any mass to convert any more.
I bet someone will come up with a program to tunnel Napster server queries through a host, then reply with the answers and IP addresses of the P2P partner, so you can go download from him for free.
I should patent this technique i guess, and no i don't care about prior art, nobody does.;-)
okay sure. i don't think sun/stardivision invested any efforts for increasing speed in this code i'll go over those 9 million lines of code for ya. expect a speed increase of about 40% in 2 or 3 weeks.;))
This whole project will take at least as long as Mozilla needed to get running. Don't expect any results in the near future and don't expect BIG results in the not-so-near future as well.
Look at it this way:
The end product will be free to use for the 'geeks', so tell me why I should be forced to pay for testing, then giving the program away to the people for free. I think that the people that will later use my program for free can sure as hell help me with finding bugs and flaws.
There exists the potential
that SAMBA will be presented as an American attempt to attack German corporate interests. Given that German nationalism (and EU federalism) is very strong
there, such a view would certainly outweigh the law, common sense, ethics, etc.The German
mentality is still, to this day, strongly bound to the "ideal" of unquestioning obedience to authority figures. If one such figure takes a firm stand, the country will
follow, through the national mindset.
Umm, oh boy. Come down, man. Calm down.
The germans are absolutely NOT strongly bound to the 'ideal' of unquestioning obedience to authority figures.
This was the case during HITLER's time, but not now. The germans aren't a bunch of Nazi's.
Those are all just prejudices, but entirely NOT true.
And the laws are excellent. YOU seem to have a very strong US nationalism. The US isn't the best country out there especially if you take a look at the laws.
I guess saying DMCA should be enough. Oh and don't forget about Patent laws.

Since the whole Gnutella Protocol is completely open, it's perfectly easy to write your own open-source GNUtella clone, I see GNUtella as being 'open' by having the open protocol.
And by the way it's a damn easy protocol. Seems like being designed for hobby programmers, and I don't think that's bad. The easier it is, the more likely it will get widely accepted.
Is it linking if you write the link in plain text ? Is it linking if you post a.wav file where you speak the url ? Is it linking when you post a phone number where people can listen to an answering machine telling you the link ? Is linking just defined as the A HREF tag ?
You can't draw the line between linking and not linking. There is no difference, it's just the 'clickability'.
But does it really matter if I can click onto some text or if i gotta copy/paste it ?
you missed the point with that. as someone already pointed out today....
It's time to start thinking about the original intent of copyright law and work from that. The intention of copyright law has been to foster the arts, not to guarantee revenue for entertainment cartels !
The internet is a free place and it should stay that way. I think it's important that no government controls and/or censors the internet way like we had it up to now. To make LINKING illegal would be - I don't know - stupid ? i mean - thats censorship isnt it ?
i can tell the location of another site to anyone and everyone i want ! I dont want that right to be taken away from me........
then just get it - replace the original filename of the download link by getting rid of the "rc3", then you've got the final version.
Example for OS X
replace
http://www.mozilla.com/products/download.html?product=firefox-3.5rc3&os=osx&lang=en-US
with
http://www.mozilla.com/products/download.html?product=firefox-3.5&os=osx&lang=en-US

wouldn't the ultimate computer be able to harness all of the energy in the universe? yes, it would. but we've limited it to a 1 kg computer with 1L.
they are, in fact, already pure energy. (e=mc) at which point i'd ask: is a computer without any mass really a computer ?
the problem is that the nuclei of the computer can't take any more energy when they are, in fact, already pure energy. (e=mc)

IANAL, but reverse engineering is explicitly allowed under the DMCA. But the main problem is: No one seems to care about that !
The illegal thing under the DMCA is circumventing a copy protection, which, phrased like this, leaves open way too much IMHO.
