  1. Re:Clarifications and Answers on Ask Slashdot: Designing a Telecom Configuration Center? · · Score: 1

OK best advise I can give is POWER POWER POWER. We set up telecom and network systems to be deployed to customer sites and constantly when on the bench we find we do not have enough outlets or we have the wrong type/connector (we have an L5-30 for 120V, but we need 220 for this particular system, etc). Get appropriate power distribution units and get a LOT of connections. As already mentioned, power conditioning is crucial if you are starting/stopping lots of equipment as the current surge can pop breakers and cause other issues. Hire an electrical contractor (NOT an electrician) experienced in large scale commercial power design to determine best power system for your benches. You also will want a large area with some sort of containment for boxes. we use commercial duty shelves; metal racking with plywood shelves but with the bottom 2 shelves not installed. This allows us to "contain" (for lack of a better term) the boxing/packaging that's too big to fit on a shelf. We label boxes and equipment as well so we don't lose track of which piece came from which box. Color coded label number system (Unbox a server, put green label with number "3" on it, same on box) works well for us.
