I work on transformers and we have what is know as a top stack transformer sitting outside our shop. It is 5000 KVA and weighs 11 tons (American Standard). this includes the core, oil tank and fittings. the tank is about the size of 5 telephone booths and the core is about the size of 2 telephone booths. the oil is a dielectric mineral oil based fluid that weighs slightley less than water. Quality transformers are made out of copper wire. half the volume of the core is silicon grain steel and the other half is copper. copper is 13.7 time heavier than iron. uaomeone want to do the rough math?. we had a palette with copper coils on it what weighed over 9000 lbs. it's total volume was only that of a lazy boy recliner. so, who else loves copper?
WIFI? Just remember that the FCC doesn't like us to make big antennas and use amplifiers. I have 2 watt amp and a 28inch parabolic dish antenna and I know they are watching.
As a student at the New Mexico School of Mining and Technology, I know we don't pay for the thing. It's all payed by the Government through the NSF. Never the less, there are a multitude of programs for the school to use the facilities. Even though the land is owned by the school, I feel that the with all the fancy new technology, the government is gonna want a bigger cut for the use of the darn thing. Is tuition going to go up? Budgets cuts? Are the tight ties with the DoD & HLS at the Playas facilities going to play a hand? And since when has SETI been associated with the VLA? I'm a member of the NMT SETI@home team and all of our work units come from Arecibo. You know, the one that is greatly lacking finding for all of their projects.
