  1. GPG? on White House Says Phone Wiretaps Will Resume For Now · · Score: 1

I've been getting concerned myself about all this, so I enjoy reading all your posts. But the most interesting thing about all this is: most email is clear text. Why? Because bozos like Microsoft, Yahoo and Google refuse to support GPG or other such standard for encryption of email.

I did some searching for encryption software in Windows and it's damn hard to find for free. On the other hand, Evolution supports GPG out of the box.

I've used Yahoo and Google Mail and there is NOTHING there for encryption and even if you wanted it, you have no way of knowing for sure if it's encrypted without confirming it with your buddies or test email. And then of course they could always save a copy for your friendly government.

For this reason, I'm not so ready to switch to web based email.

Consider that the National Association for the Self-Employed offers the following on their policies: you pay a monthly premium from now until you're 65. Your premium never goes up. When you get there, they say, ok, lets look at your claims against the insurance. They add them up. Then add up the premiums you've paid. And they give you the difference if anything is left over. Apparently, they invest the money because i was told that if I started today, i would have about $800k in premiums paid. Then they would deduct the claims and give me the difference. They are the first company I've heard of that does this. Had I know about this, I would have done it a long time ago.

Just in case anyone hasn't noticed, the Communications Workers of America have conducted a worldwide survey of internet access speeds. What they found is that Japan is number one with 61 Mb/s. We're didn't even place. You can read about that, here.http://www.itwire.com/content/view/13184/1066/. I guess the MPAA and the RIAA don't have very much pull in Japan.
