Because they paid a fortune to MSFT to use the actual source code for Windows (similar to what Citrix did with NT) and because, unlike WINE, MainSoft is a for-profit operation (I know, it's shocking) and they charge, according to a self-described MainSoft port-ware user yesterday, upwards of $20,000 just to get started.
The real question is: how much is WINE helping MainSoft??

The more applications the better. Why not have the most used, too?
Anyway, all I want is IE5(doesn't even need to be 5.5 -- 5.01 is fine)for Linux.
As a web application developer using HTML/CSS/XHTML/ECMAScript/XML/XSLT/XSD I cannot make it without IE5.01+. (Yes, I grab the nightly builds of Mozilla but remain unmoved).
IE 5 for Linux!

Not having the books in front of me I am depending on memory. Churchill may refer to Japanese language "imprecision" and not "ambiguity", I seem to recall now. In any event, read about the Coral Sea battles -- it's in there.
I will refrain from jabs at your moniker.;-)

Thanks for the reasoned response to the baseless charges against Corel. In light of Microsoft, Sun, &c, antics Corel's "screwing" of Dubious^WDebian was a friendly gesture.

As to English's effect on programming versus Perl in native Japanese, Winston Churchill might have a (biased) opinion, if he were alive today.
In his The Second World War (a six-volume set mainly of his memos as Prime Minister and Minister of Defense for GB during that war) he attributes the collaspe of the Japanese Navy's offensive strategy in the South Pacific (particularly the setback in the Coral Sea in 1942) to the ambiguties of the Japanese language. In substance he said the Japanese had to withdraw and regroup whenever a tactical plan met with an obstacle because of language ambiguities, while the English-speakers could communicate in clear, definite fashion to make ad-hoc adjustments as needed.
IANALinguist, but I found Churchill's comments fascinating. If some Japanese-speaking/. community-members want to refute this notion, please do. (I'm not proposing it is true, only reporting what the Prime Minister said).

Looking is OK as long as you don't try to break-in.
Actually, no. Looking In is also called 'peeping Tom' activity, loitering, or voyerism, depending on the state. See this list of such laws by state (which may be out-dated, but proves the point).
When I advertise my TCP services, that is a welcome mat, or an invitation for entry. Probing my system to find openings (even if you don't enter) is invasive and counter to decency.
Ergo, I report every TCP Port Scan of my systems to the proper authorities (ISPs, etc.). When I find someone running a SATAN-type scanner (more aggressive than just TCP port scanning) against my systems I report to legal authorities. Have a nice day.

This has no relevance, but I'm abusing Slashdot to say that I think Bush is a rotten candidate, and while I don't like Gore, I would vote for a inanimate carbon rod for president before I would vote for GWB.
That's OK, CT. Geeks make for poor political creatures so I don't put any weight on your political opinions, anyway. Go ahead and speak your mind (as if you'd stop) -- I'll keep reading slashdot for the reasons I began (and those have nothing to do with seeking input on political viewpoints).
Besides, if it's not W then you're stuck with Gore.
(Anyone else think this year's presidential campaign sounds like a troll for the Stileproject: Want Bush or Gore? Why not BOTH!)
Your.sig has an error in it: add a ";" to the end of all the entities and it'll work right.
It's not an error in the.sig. According to the standards the semi-colon at the end of character references is not required.
Sorry, but under Mozilla it handles the entities semi-correctly
You're right: this is Mozilla's failure to adhere to proper standards (again). Because of this kind of failure, the W3C had to make thisnote:
Note. In SGML, it is possible to eliminate the final ";" after a character reference in some cases (e.g., at a line break or immediately before a tag). In other circumstances it may not be eliminated (e.g., in the middle of a word).
We strongly suggest using the ";" in all cases to avoid problems with user agents that require this character to be present . (Emphasis added)
I'd rather code to a standard than to a user agent (that isn't even finished yet).
I'll behave now....

I saw one of these crippled machines at Fry's last week and rolled my eyes and said, "Why bother?"
I forgot two other reasons why I like my Workpad z50:
- 95%-scale silent keyboard
- 10" LCD screen (640 x 480)
I won't buy a notebook that doesn't have a regular TFT (ok, maybe HPN) monitor, near-full-size keyboard, and 8 hour battery-life (half a day of work).Looks like I'll be getting an IBM later this year.

I have an IBM Workpad z50 which runs WinCE and NetBSD. Love it. It has spoiled me on one unique feature: 8 hour battery life.
I go to conferences and don't worry about plugs or extra batteries. I can take notes, or do some work (usually), while the conference proceeds.
The only drawbacks are: DSTN LCD screen (not viewable at the beach) and limited OS/apps.
When the Crusoe-powered notebooks come I will definitely be looking to buy. But, which one??

changed it. However, the semi-colon is not required by HTML. Mozilla is broke.
California may be morally simular to the Netherlands, but, believe me, they're worlds apart.
