If you are interested in cross platform development, you might want to check wxWindows at wxwindows.org.

It is a nice cross platform C++ framework that uses GTK+ under Linux, and the native API calls under win32. It also works under MacOS (I think) and has a very active developer community.

Both Perl and Python support instantiating COM objects under win32 platforms. DAO and ADO are implemeted as COM interfaces so you should be able to use them from these languages. I'm not very familiar with DAO, but I understand that moving to ADO (MS preferred solution at the moment) is fairly trivial. ADO interfaces were all designed with scripting in mind so they always use types and interfaces that can be used from scritping languages (i.e. late binding using the IDispatch interface).

A group of medium to big players in the telecommunications business have released some of their software with open source licensing. You still have to buy the hardware though. NMS (Natural MicroSystems) has very recently released software and drivers for their hardware for Linux. For more information please check http://www.opentelecom.org/
