It it practical to use an HD in write-protect mode? (Some hard drives have a write-protect jumper: Google "ide hd write protect jumper".) Put the system software on the WP'd drive and use a second HD for the remainder.

I think so. I used made-up name, address, etc., for a Safeway savings card. Of course, I used it with my debit card. Now, when I use it and pay cash the clerk always says "Thank you, Mr. Myname."
