The point of the parent was that Google Desktop Search had an opportunity to include Firefox (with logo) on their page: http://desktop.google.com/, as well as in the indexing portion of the software. Google had a huge opportunity to integrate an amazing project into their beta GDS, but decided to leave it out.
Parent post was modded as "Funny", but its unfortunate that it's listed at the top of my threshold three right now. The fact of the matter is, most people wouldn't pay for the music they own if they had the option between keeping their pirated copies, or purchasing new ones.
That being said, the community of people that DO join a music service for availability or error-free high-quality digital music will cause this service to actually take a corner of the market that the recording industry has been trying to stifle.
I think more people would be willing to join a music service if they could be assured that the revenue would actually reach the artist at some point, instead of being tied up in the RIAA or the recording industry.
Time Warner of Syracuse (and a few other cities I imagine) offer the following DVR. This DVR costs $6.95 per month for the box (same as a digital cable box-- which this replaces) and another $9.99 for the service. Compare that to the monthly cost of TiVo, and you can see why this makes alot of sense. The DVR:
Automatically record your favorite shows Pause live TV and do your own instant replays Watch one show while recording another Record two shows at the same time No expensive equipment to buy Parental controls Includes Picture in Picture screen so you can view two shows at the same time, swapping between the main screen and the smaller one. Professional installation and 24/7 service Retail rate is $9.95 per month! Sign up today and take advantage of our special introductory rate of $6.95! Limited time offer -- so call today!
The TW DVR gives about 40 hours of record time, and most of the same functionality as TiVO, integrated right into their schedules.. it remains to be seen if the Time Warner will slap us with labels and liberally as TiVo.
I'm not a big fan of conspiracy theory, but I've been reading through all of these articles things just started to form in my head.
The SirCam worm hit the Internet in July and mysteriously did nothing. Someone spent a whole lot of time creating code that propagated very well, but seemed to miss the code that would release the payload, filling up disk space.
Now, the RIAA, in it's most cowardly move ever, is trying to piggy-back on an anti-terrorism bill that would allow them to "hack into computers and delete copyrighted filed" without having repercussions, using the DMCA as it's backing of course.
The RIAA, in their infinite wisdom, now shares their plans with the public:
"We referred to it as the 'license to virus,'"
Personally, I wouldn't put this past the RIAA, but I'd like to hear what others have to say!
Ok.. i kinda take offense to this as a third year Computer Science Major. My education has been based on theory, algoriths, and fundamental theorems of computer programming and software design/implementation.
Your comparision of Computer Science to dotcom whore is about as accurate as calling a music education student an industrialist.
Especially with the advent of IST majors, and colleges which specialize in the internet and information marketing the students for careers, people have to keep in mind that in general, a CS degree supercedes an IST degree.
Now back to the comparison of CS and CE.. To say one is better than the other is just horseradish. Neither can properly exist without the other. Yes a computer engineer is taught some programming, but they are typically nowhere near as skilled with programming theory and optimization. Yes CS students have a basic understanding of logic and circuit design, along with a core in assembly, but they can't just jump into creating embedded systems..
