What problems? I think it a great idea to require people to actually learn what's on their harddrives and to decide if they want to keep it or not, rather than overwriting everything. Besides, in the era of 3,4,5 or bigger HD's it common to have more than one partition on a single HD.
No,Mettler whole viewpoint come from the Windows world where *ANYONE* can slip in a hacked program with little or no trouble. His whole line of reasoning falls apart when he tries to apply it to Unix/Linux and it infurates him to no end whenever anyone points it out to him Hence his ZDNET postings....
Most people I know use HotMail as a dumping ground for spam from their USENET postings. They really don't use their HotMail email adress for serious mail.
And you are a fool. Everybody knows that there will never be a port of a microsoft product to linux for the simple reason that the linux user base and microsoft dislike each other too much. This is nothing but an attempt by Microsoft to delay the adoption of linux and it won't work. People are pretty much fed up with the vaporware from microsoft and this kind of thing won't help microsoft, but rather bolster the DOJ's case against microsoft, since it's widely known and acknowleged that microsoft has little or no role to play within linux. Why do you really think chrome effects got shelved? It was most likely because microsoft couldn't get the non-microsoft world to embrace the concept, let alone support it.
The problem is that RMS *REALLY* needs to tell his supporters *TO SHUT THE HELL UP* once and for all. They are the ones who are *REALLY* making him look bad. The Wired article is a perfect example of this. I really have to wonder if the "not having kids" statement is what RMS meant to say, or was it something the person writting the article thought RMS was saying.
"better things to do than have kids"

This kind of thing is why Wired Magazine is nothing but a pile of shit. I've never really understood what people see in this rag. 90% of the material seems to have lifted straight from the pages of STAR or Weekly World News. Doubt it? Glance though them and honestly say you can tell the difference bettween Wired and the other mentioned. You can't.
Get over it. Slackware fell asleep at the switch and paid the price for it. There's a reason people like myself dumped Slackware and went with RedHat, and you damn well know what they are.
MS hijack linux? Get real. Are you forgeting certain companies who has as much reason to dislike Microsoft as linux users who are now actively supporting linux? You guys are kidding yourself if you think Mircosoft is going to be a major player in a enviroment that wants nothing to do with them.
Wrong. The Video Toaster crowd killed the Amiga, not the suits as you put it. Pull out the last year or so of Amiga World before it bit the dust and tell us just what most of the articles were about. You got it, the Video Toaster. Now for the Video Toaster crowd this may have been just great, but for people like myself who owned an Amiga 3000 as well as an A500 before that but really didn't give a damn about the Toaster it was one of the things that convinced us to jump ship before Commodore bit the dust.
Can you say sour grapes from the Microsoft supporters? Sure you can. Remember how these guys were boasting that how linux would never really amount to anything less than a year ago?
Exactly. This is why the internet is so important to OSS. It lets us do end-runs around the PC Mags of the computer industry. Does anyone think that this kind of article would *ever* appear in a Ziff-Davis publication? Of course not. All you have to do is look at PC Mag for the last year. Lots and lots of hype about NT 5.0/Windows 2000, virtually nothing concering linux or the BSD's. How do I miss the old Compute! magazine. Too bad that got turned into magazine that did nothing but advertise Windows software.
What the heck kind of modem is this? Must be a Winmodem, since I've never heard of a external modem that does this. Maybe you mean the comm/fax software that comes with the modem? In any case there is a simple solution to the problem. Don't use your *Real Name* as it printed in the phone book, utility bills or your drivers licence. Use a modified form of it.
These flamewars are a lot more interesting than anything Katz had to say aren't they? I still wonder why he just doesn't post this nonsense of his on AOL where it belongs...
The reason for all the "piracy HOWTOs" articles as you put it is that a lot (if not the vast majority) of the posters here on Slashdot know that despite what the industry claims, and what you see printed in the Ziff-Davis magazines this kind of "security/protection" is a big joke. Read an article in PC MAG (or any other Windows mag) telling you how safe and secure e-commerce is? *DON'T YOU BELIVE IT* The crackers are sitting back and laughing their heads off at you.
Umm. There are programs that generate fake credit card numbers. They've been floating around for years now. Also a cracker can easily beat this by using stolen credit card numbers to produce the key. All it takes is for one credit card number to be accepted
Wrong. Sound in RedHat is modular. You don't really need to complie anything for basic sound support under RedHat. Get your facts straight.

Nope. Until Windows was bundled with PC's it was pretty much a flop market-wise. Go and read the really old Byte back issues.

No. You just can't do basic math. 67+3=70. 70+30=100. See?
True, and it's also the KDE crowd who's pretty much behind all the RedHat bashing we've been seeing.
Get over it. Slackware fell asleep at the switch and paid the price for it. There's a reason people like myself dumped Slackware and went with RedHat, and you damn well know what they are.
So the dists adopt RPM. Big fucking deal.

He's confusing the BSD's with Linux....

Nah. Beamed into the middle of a storage tank full of antimatter, yeah....
Couldn't have put it better. A real geek movie is "Attack of The Killer Tomatoes"
