I used to work at IBM for a short while, and whatever their faults otherwise, the research they do in so many technology areas is absolutely amazing (and I only saw a little bit, the tip of the iceberg). Microsoft does software mostly, and hardware sometimes and usually badly. IBM research is a vast international brain-trust looking across a broad array of the technology spectrum.
