Point 1: We have been using QAM in 56k modems for years.
Point 2: There will have to be alot of infrastructre work done before we get the required singlemode fiber to my house. It won't hang from a power pole, every slight bounce and swing of that cable will induce phase noise (bad news for QAM). Buried cable will just love earthquakes!
