Some health department people that I work with are dismayed by the lack of truth contained in both "Erin Brokovich" and "A Civil Action". Neither case came up with evidence to really link the actions of the defendants with the illnesses of the plantiffs. Then again, these are statistics addicts, so what do you expect.
Next time though, why not mention a story that actually merits national attention: the WR Grace vermiculite mine in Liberty, Montana. They have had processing plants for their asbestos laden vermiculite in many of our 50 states.

I think it is Apple the company that demands that, not mac users (very few user communities speak with one voice). It is one of the upsides for customers that tight vendor platform control provides.
I think we can think of a few downsides too, but this is already way off-topic.
"the root of this whole thing (at least in the court) has always been that once Microsoft dropped IE in people's laps they wouldn't/didn't go to the extra effort of acquiring Netscape's browser."
I don't think you've been following the same court case I've been following. Or perhaps you use ZDNet as your information filter. Or maybe you're drunk.;-)
It doesn't matter. For what it's worth, the root of the whole matter is this: did Microsoft use monopoly power to preclude competition in it's markets.
"Just as removing TCP/IP would (to make win98 more like win31)."
Are you retarded? Removing TCP/IP doesn't cripple Windows at all. Now, removing the ability to install TCP/IP might cripple windows, but we aren't talking about that, are we.
"somehow" = via contract with the large OEMs (and Sony did _not_ qualify at the time), Microsoft disallowed the pre-installation of Netscape (and other browsers) on most OEM machines.
"absurdity" = a journalist finds the "best" product when charged with doing so, immediately after formulating the "best" criteria.
"'Course, we *do* still have an electoral college instead of real votes, and we *did* end up with bush/gore as our 2 best presidential cantidates, so maybe we are too simple-minded"
So true, so true:-(
Does anyone else think it should have been Bradley vs. McCain instead of robot vs. simpleton?
If money is not a free flowing and unfettered thing in your organization, and your investment is a mighty one, perhaps you can prepare dueling cost estimates when you have more information.
Actually seeing how much money their actions and/or policies piss away may even give a bureaucrat pause.
Then again, they may try to ignore it.
If they do, you can keep bringing it up and hope that someone cares about waste in government, though that may wear on you.
Fight the good fight,
Troy
If you can't stay connected without a crash, disconnect. I think you abuse the net with your "please don't use this extension when communicating with me" modification of the RFC.
"Oh, and please don't send any ICMP type 4 packets to my server or it will crash. Dammit! You did it again!"
Sis-Boom-Bah! I think, my comments, were ooooon topic! Rah-Rah! But maybe, perhaps, they reveeealed more! Go Linux! And so, too bad, Anonymous Coward! Yeeeeaaaaa Team!!!
The "cheerleading" is not in the successful use, but in adding it to a discussion where it is not relevant. Your points point and questions are well taken, but not relevant.
I believe that Microsoft does indeed act as a Great Satan in the software world, but again, this is also not relevant. What is relevant is your comment about modifying their business practices, but I believe that has been tried (see previous consent decree). So honestly, I think they've had a chance to change their evil ways, and they blew it.
It seems we have a difference of opinion with regard to cheerleading. So be it. IANACL, but I think it is cheerleading, my friend.
...should not be illegal. It may be time to rethink our values. Do we value privacy and freedom, or do we value the "right" to profit? There may come a point in time when people will leave this land for a place that once again puts the rights of the individual above the rights of goverment, be it government of the state or of music. This is no longer the land of the free and the home of the brave. It is a land of gray landscapes, lies, and litigation. Where is my sweet land of liberty?
Nice smart-alecy answer, but each of those calculations need to be done (by hand or by machine), should to be checked for accuracy, and takes up space on paper or a disk. Which would take more time (and thus be more inconvenient), more calculations or fewer calculations? The correct answer is "more calculations", which might lead one to think it was less efficient. I hope it leads you there...
Pick up any "DataComm Warehouse" mag or go to there website (www.warehouse.com) or to CDW (www.cdw.com) and you can buy as much NetWare 3 & 4 as you like. Something make me think you didn't try _too_ hard to solve this problem...
...but your brevity and acidity make me think you haven't put much thought into what you'd like to argue about. It looks like you just want to argue. That would make you a troll. Die troll, die!
Please don't listen to the "go to MS-SQL Server" people. A vendor said that to a company I worked for and it had more stability (but what doesn't have more stability than Access?), but it came with its own set of stupid problems. Keep it simple, use the MySQL/Linux combo and suck the access file into MySQL on a daily basis. I think you'll be pleased with the results, especially since your database is only 14 MB (upsize that to SQL Server?!? ridiculous!). Good luck!
Please don't self-edit because some well-meaning but misguided person wants narrow threads on slashdot. Speak your mind, I want to hear it. This is not an article, it is more of a conversation, and the post you made wasn't so far off topic that is should provoke the response it got. That is my less than humble opinion.
I am sorry to say that there is a group of people that is not as fortunate as you. And, if this legislation passes, that group is likely to grow. Are you just flamebaiting, or are you really suggesting that this legislation is OK because of your past licensing experience with large software packages?
The *press* thing, I don't think that matters as much as you imply.
I don't appreciate a C++ code lock-in (I like other languages too, you know) or reliance on a widget library from one vendor (where's the choice), but I do appreciate the whole KDE project.
Now that some guys, who write great code, and say mean thing because they are egomaniacs: that is not news and I don't care. I also don't care to hear anyone elses excuses for them (please, if their act like asses sometimes, make them make their own excuses).
I see _no_ reason why there cannot be two, open source, word processing programs with similar (not the same) goals. This thread was full of points that could have been past over (not just missed), in my grand opinion.:-)
But it is only my opinion and I'll thank you for yours anyway. And good day!

Why don't you just raise a white flag? You lost.

What about "The Day the Universe Changed", "Connections", and "Connections 2"? Are they available in this format?

Indeed!
I wonder how many Linux bugs will be found on NTBugTraq?

Wow! I didn't know that guy was from Napster. How could you tell?
Does a person have to align themselves with Napster when they object to the actions of the recording industry? I don't think so.
