    Put a motion controller in it and it's great actually. It makes a very nice mouse replacement.

    Although simple cursor keys can replace the mouse (or finger) in most GUIs. If that's not the case, then you probably did it wrong.

    Those paired Roku remotes are annoying. I really should label all of mine so I can keep track of them. My Myth remotes are fine. I have the same model for every machine in the house and they are all interchangeable. They even congregate together (they must all get lonely) and it's all good.

    Half the time with the Roku remotes I just don't bother and I use the app. That's still a little awkward though.

    Even when I'm using my phone for nothing else, it goes to sleep after I use it. Then I have to wake it up again when I want to do something. That turns a trivial thing into a bothersome thing.

    Sometimes I wonder if these ninnies actually do any of the things they suggest that others do.

    Been there, done that. Not amused.

    The old PIs play video fine, it's the UI that's sluggish. Special purpose silicon handles video playback. It's everything else that that has to depend a system that's underpowered for general purpose use.

    ...so then you must obviously be able to point to some recent notorious models like the 1.5TB and the 3TB Barracudas. You should be able to do this off the top of your head. HELL, you should have included an example in your post.

    Although I suspect that you're just talking BS.

    I think my first batch of WD replacements are coming up on the age at which my last batch of Seagates started to become bothersome.

    Even for a small home array, it's terribly annoying when all of your drives die young and all at the same time (Seagate).

    I have a 1.5TB Seagate drive that is still spinning.

    You can manage to get lucky even with the most notorious hardware.

    Drives of that size are no longer limited to gimped "archival" roles.

    On the one hand, a drive is probably likely to be more reliable when you pamper it and don't really do much with it. On the other hand, I've had plenty of Seagates fail in just that kind of use case.

    Gimped archive disks? Who cares if they are reliable or not?

    Plus this is New York City we're talking about here. You can't stretch your arms without giving someone a black eye. Any kind of geo-location based restrictions on anyone seem totally absurd. Things like this in particular will impact a large number of people in the "blast zone".

    Not even sure how that idea works in NYC at all anyways.

    That's kind of what a driver is supposed to do. It's rather obvious that if you trust the vendor enough to use their hardware that you trust them enough to use their software.

    The OS exists to enable you to do other stuff. If it fails to do this, then it becomes worthless regardless of how "tidy" you think it is.

    There is no perfection. There is no total safety. There is no condition where there will be zero risks. It's like the corporate mentality has completely infested society.

    A driver can be signed and still be trash.

    NONE of the wannabe gatekeepers have the full bandwidth to vet things. Realistically the only thing they can do is rubber stamp things.

    ...and all of that is unadulterated bullshit. The underlying operating system is FAR more dangerous because it's a piece of shit engineered to spy on the user. It's always been a piece of shit because Microsoft always puts marketing and other "business" objectives ahead of the product (far ahead). They only reason anyone uses their virus infested product is because they managed to corner the market in the days of MS-DOS.

    The fact that the OS is swiss cheese is far more of a problem than "the user making the wrong choice".

    If you're gotten to the point of showing such obvious contempt for the end user then you're doing it wrong.

    No. It just hasn't changed since the days of SunOS and Ultrix.

    That "consistency" that some people like to whine about also matters between versions. The academics that like to make up these rules will tell you exactly the same thing.

  14. It would make far more sense to allow the end user to "lock" the drivers. This would also allow people and companies to make sure that a particular configuration OF THEIR CHOICE isn't screwed around with by anyone INCLUDING Microsoft.

    Change control on a Windows box is a far more interesting problem.

    Just who are you trying to kid? Do you know who you're talking to? A rootkit doesn't need anything quite that low level.

    This entire approach to the "problem" is like putting a band-aid on a bullet wound after the victim has already been shot full of holes. He never should have gotten shot to begin with.

    Drivers as a source of viruses? Talk about unreasonable. The fact that Microsoft's is Hollywood's BITCH is far more plausible.

    I don't see it as a disaster. I didn't see the old state of things as a disaster either. I think that media outlets just need to manufacture excitement in order to sell ads.

    If you see a charge you don't recognize, you tell the bank immediately and it gets sorted. Your total risk is limited. It doesn't impact your credit rating.

    If the CC company is good enough, they will overnight you a replacement card.

    Although as others have said... if your card issuer is really diligent they will recognize a strange pattern themselves and tell you first.

    Much of this isn't terribly bothersome and some of it actually ends up being more convenient. Some of it's a little paranoid but not much. Mostly just be mindful of the risks of using each type payment.

    You can sum up most of it with "Credit card risk is very limited and anything tied to your bank account is terribly dangerous".

    Well, you simply need to be prepared for disasters. That's all there is to it. Your entire bank can get shut down. You need a plan for when this sort of thing happens. Don't keep your eggs all in one basket and keep some cash around.

    There was a funny meme on Facebook attributing different forms of xenophobia to opposing each of the different big Democrats. I realized at that point that Democrats have completely lost touch with reality. You can't just insult people you disagree with and call it a day. That just leaves a lot of pissed off people about.

    Up until that point, I only thought it was the Republicans that were actively striving to alienate as much of the electorate as they possibly can.

    Sooner or later people will just get numb to the accusations and not care about them any more because they know they're total bullsh*t.

    People are starting to talk about 3rd party candidates.
