Woo-Hoo! My little GM-didn't-kill-the-streetcars
page got mentioned on Slashdot! Cool. Now let's
see how much traffic my little ADSL connection can handle.
I have PacBell DSL in Pasadena, and I'm pretty
happy with it. Their mail server sucks, but I
run my own. I got in on the original deal with
a static IP with basic service, so I run my own
mail and web servers. But the connection is
good. According to
Big Brother I have only 0.13% downtime for
the last 52 weeks.
I registered cosmo.pasadena.ca.us last summer.
It was easy. $10 one-time charge, and the it only
took a day. It all depends on who is administering the domain.
My web server had a spike from 3.5 hits/min to over 800 hits/min. This happened because it serves earthquake information for Southern California, and the spike happened about 15 minutes after the October 16th Hector Mine quake. The server statistics report graphs looked just like the graphs in the article. And yes, the server was on its knees for several hours after the quake. How do other servers handle sudden large spikes in traffic?
