Security decisions are usually dominated by economic and business considerations; it's often been said that Microsoft will stop making insecure software shortly after customers stop buying it.
Let's say I'm a shareholder, explain to me why you should be spending money on security. Where and how much is the return on investment?
You will also have to balance many considerations when determining what security to implement. What are the major security tradeoffs/decisions you anticipate making this year?
Currently q=nazi returned 29.9 million for both france and germany (.fr,.de). However, a quick check of Scandinavian countries returned 27.5 million. I specifically searched Denmark, Sweden, and Norway (.dk,.se, and.no).
Did Google change their policy for.de and.fr to hide their censoring actions?
Not really. If you're on the team or a professor who likes to brag, then it's big. Recruiters like to see it on resumes too. (Additionally, Americans are much more competitive in nature than *most* countries IMO) My uni was apparently really good at these competitions and won a lot.
Out of 1100 or so undergraduates in the program, I only knew one guy who was on a team. He was a good coder, but in a class competition, my Robocode robot beat his.:) But perhaps he got a bigger laugh by his free trip to the programming championships... in Prague.
Other factors: 1) Cost, narf. 2) Power, we already have the biggest uninterruptable power supply in the state. If we added another I think our small college town would experience "rolling blackouts."
Bruce Schneier usually covers this stuff pretty well, as he did frequently last spring. Punch this into google: "choicepoint site:schneier.com"
