Yes, compared to the *BSDs for instance Linux documentation is definitely lacking. I am a BSD user now but I used to use Linux too before I wisened up.
Diet and exercise is the only way to lose weight and keep it off forever. Everything else is a fad and a delusion. Nothing else works so this study is no surprise. If they jogged weekly and changed their diet they would have seen significant weight loss. Thing is bonafide joggers are alot more conscious of the fuel they use to stoke their furnaces compared to average people and newbie joggers. Personally right now I do a modified NAVY SEALs training regimen (even though I'm not in the NAVY SEALs) and I'm in elite physical condition.
I started using linux in 1997. Now I use Windows, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Something like Ubuntu existing in the 1990s is unthinkable. Some call this progress but I call the dumbing down of *Nix. Linux used to be exclusively for Geeks and have a relatively knowledgeable user base but now it is for bitches and dumb ones at that. BSD is the way so pick one : FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. I personally will never use Linux ever again if I can help it.

A wise man does not make chasing after pleasure a priority but makes avoiding pain one. I view sex from a utilitarian perspective a practical Aristotelianism. Sex is to reproduce from a evolutionary and biological point of view therefore having sex with a condom is trivial and hedonism. I'm pretty anti-sensual in general. Don't want kids or STDs ? Simply don't have sex instead of using a condom. Using a condom just isn't as pleasurable so the only reason I can see for doing it is perhaps to get to an intimidate level with a female partner but players that go around sleeping with lots of people with condoms and have no significant relationships with their partners make no sense to me. So I choose celibacy over sex with a condom (yes I really can practice self-restraint even with a beautiful woman).

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your argument but I don't think so. If a developer develops his software on Slackware or Slamd64 it will work/compile on a widerange of Linux, Unix and BSD platforms. Slackware is also LSB compliant. So if most developers worked under Slackware or Slamd64 there would be no problem IMO. That doesn't mean I'm advocating that Slackware or Slamd64 be the only distro that we should all rally behind. I think the idea of rallying behind one distro is a bad idea because it will ultimately be some lowest common denominator distro that is heavily GUI based and convoluted with spaghetti code (arguably to make the distro easier for end users) etc.. It won't be some simple and elegant solution like Slackware or Arch Linux. So if Linux developers ever rallied behind just one distro I would probably switch over to BSD.
One year free of Microsoft ? What's the big deal ? I've been Microsoft free for about 7 years or more now. I started using Linux with Redhat 5.0 (that was their buggiest release in their history btw AFAIK). I've also tried Debian, Slackware, Corel Linux (remember that one ?), Mandrake (when it was still Mandrake and not Mandriva), Progeny (a now defunct offshoot of Debian), Arch Linux, Suse, and Fedora. Right now I have Fedora 9 on my laptop computer and the computer lab in my apartment building runs 20 diskless terminals with an earlier version of Fedora and only 2 computers in the lab run Windows. I'm not in charge of the computer lab and I never use the window machines in the computer lab. Granted, alot of my Microsoft free years have also in the past been with FreeBSD and NetBSD even but right now I just use Fedora Linux and I don't miss Microsoft windows at all.

I know Python, C, C++, Perl, Java and LISP -- aren't those the most important hacker languages to know ?
PHP and Apache are both outdated on their (RIAA) website with both an HTTP Trace method vulnerability and PHP vulnerability : http://osvdb.org/show/osvdb/12184 http://osvdb.org/show/osvdb/877
